Preview and odds for World Cup qualifier

Colombia are back to winning ways in their bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup but now face a tough task at home to Argentina.

A three-match winless streak was ended by a 3-0 victory against Peru which lifted Colombia to sixth in the South American qualifying table but Argentina remain unbeaten in second.

Tuesday night’s match is live on Premier Sports and kicks off at midnight as we highlight a few potential Colombia v Argentina betting tips.

Colombia v Argentina match odds

Colombia’s qualification hopes had been rocked by back-to-back defeats against Uruguay (3-0) and Ecuador (6-1) but the win in Peru means they are only outside the four qualifying places on goal difference.

Everton defender Yerry Mina gave them the lead in the 40th minute and Colombia took advantage of Peru going down to 10 men just before half-time as Mateus Uribe and Luis Diaz struck early in the second half.

Colombia held on for a much-needed win despite having Daniel Munoz sent off just three minutes after coming on but they go into this game as the 2/1 underdogs.

Argentina are 6/4 favourites after winning three and drawing two of their qualifiers to sit four points behind leaders Brazil, with another draw 2/1.

La Albiceleste had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Chile on Friday when Lionel Messi’s penalty was cancelled out by an Alexis Sanchez equaliser.

That was only the third goal Argentina have conceded in this World Cup qualifying campaign and an Argentina win to nil can be backed at 11/4.

Lionel Messi, Argentina

Colombia v Argentina head-to-head

Colombia will be encouraged by their last meeting with Argentina at the 2019 Copa America when second-half goals from Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata secured a 2-0 win.

Four of the previous seven meetings had been goalless so this could be another cagey contest and a 0-0 draw is available at 6/1.

Backing ‘no’ in the both teams to score market would have paid out in eight of the last nine meetings and is an option here at 3/4, with Colombia having failed to score in Argentina since a 2-1 defeat in a friendly in 1999.

Previous XI

Colombia vs Argentina - Football tactics and formations
Colombia: Ospina, Medina, Tesillo, Mina, Sanchez, Cuellar, Cuadrado, Uribe, Zapata, Muriel, Diaz.

Argentina: E Martinez, Martinez Quarta, Tagliafico, Foyth, Romero, Paredes, De Paul, Di Maria, Ocampos, Messi, L Martinez.

Key battles

Messi remains the dangerman for Argentina as he looks to lead his country to World Cup glory at last but the Barcelona forward has only managed two goals in five qualifiers so far and both were from the penalty spot.

Messi is the 7/2 favourite to open the scoring but he and Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez will face a physical test against a Colombia defence featuring Mina, who is 13/2 to get on the scoresheet once again.

Colombia have scored more goals than Argentina in this campaign but must now find a way past goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who should be full of confidence after an impressive season for Aston Villa.
