Preview and odds for Wednesday’s Olympics football opener

The delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics gets under way two days ahead of the official opening ceremony, as we take a look at some potential Great Britain v Chile betting tips.

There are 12 teams competing in the tournament, divided into three groups of four. After a round-robin format, the top two teams and the two best third-placed teams advance to the quarter-finals.

Wednesday’s Group E clash, which takes place at the Sapporo Dome, is live on BBC Two and kicks off at 8.30am.

Great Britain v Chile match odds

Great Britain will expect to open their account with victory and are 2/13 favourites given they are one of the leading contenders in the outright betting.

In a group with Canada and Japan, Great Britain will need to see off the group’s outsiders and build confidence before facing the host nation on Saturday.

This is an England-heavy side, with the addition of Scottish midfielder Caroline Weir, who scored eight times and assisted on three goals in 20 appearances for Manchester City this season.

Weir provides a potent left-sided option for the team who are playing in the Olympics for only the second time in history.

England are ranked sixth in the world, much higher than the other home nations, and should be too strong for opponents ranked 37th in the world.

England are 8/15 to be the first team to score in the first half and 4/9 to win to nil.

Kim Little, Olympics, Great Britain v Chile betting tips

Scotland midfielder Kim Little is a key component in the Great Britain Women’s line-up

Scotland’s Kim Little, Wales’ Sophie Ingle and England’s Steph Houghton have all been named as captains of the Team GB squad. Each player will wear the armband on rotation throughout the tournament.

Scotland vice-captain Little and England skipper Houghton are also captains at their clubs Arsenal and Manchester City respectively, while Ingle, who plays for Chelsea, wears the armband for Wales.

Great Britain beat New Zealand 3-0 in a behind-closed-doors warm-up last week, with Ellen White netting a brace and fellow forward Nikita Parris also on the scoresheet at the Todoroki Stadium in the Greater Tokyo area.

In terms of Great Britain v Chile betting tips, Team GB are 3/5 to lead at half-time and full-time and it is 3/4 that they win with over 2.5 goals in the game, while they can be backed at 23/20 to win both halves.

White and fellow striker Fran Kirby, who scored 16 goals this season for Chelsea in helping them claim its title, will cause plenty of problems for the Chile defence.

Chile freeze in front of goal

Chile have one of the world’s best goalkeepers in captain Christiane Endler, who kept 19 clean sheets in 22 league matches for PSG this season.

Outside of Endler’s accomplishments, though, it’s been a rough few years for Chile on the international scene.

Chile have scored just eight goals in 13 games against non-South American teams and have managed one win and a draw in those matches.

Chile are 28/1 to win the match and the draw is on offer at 13/2.

María José Urrutia scored Chile’s only goal at the 2019 World Cup as Chile benefited from a Thailand own goal in their one win over non-South American foes over the past two-plus years.

Chile are unlikely to pose much of an attacking threat and are 6/1 to score the first goal.

Karen Araya scored Chile’s only goal in their two friendlies since 2020, while they have very few proven attackers to rely upon for this tournament.

Chile are 2/1 to score at least one goal, according to the Great Britain v Chile betting tips.
