Preview and odds for Friday’s women’s Olympics football clash

We are at the quarter-final stage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and have looked at the odds to find some Great Britain v Australia betting tips.

GB topped their group to advance while Australia’s point against the USA put them into the last eight.

Friday’s clash, which takes place at the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium, Kashima, Japan, is on the BBC Red Button from 10am BST.

Great Britain v Australia match odds

Great Britain had already secured their quarter-final berth before their 1-1 draw with Canada on Tuesday.

An 85th-minute deflected strike from Scotland forward Caroline Weir cancelled out Adriana Leon’s goal.

Seven points from their three games – which included victories over Chile and Japan – meant Great Britain topped Group E and Hege Riise’s side are 4/5 to defeat Australia and reach the semi-finals.

There was no doubt Great Britain deserved their point against Canada as they created several good opportunities, with Rachel Daly (twice) and Weir both spurning good first-half chances.

They were made to pay when Leon stole in at the far post to slot home Ashley Lawrence’s cross and it did not look to be Weir’s day when she had a shot cannon off the post and crossbar.

But her luck turned with five minutes remaining as her 30-yard shot took a heavy deflection and left goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe wrong-footed.

Both sides knew they would progress before kick-off but Great Britain, who feature in our Olympics women’s football winner odds, stay in Kashima.

Their opponents – better known as the Matildas – qualified for the knockout phase after a 0-0 draw with the USA.

Australia opened their competition with a 2-1 win over their Oceanic rivals New Zealand, followed that up with a 4-2 loss to Sweden while a draw on Tuesday meant they finished third in Group G behind Sweden and the United States.

The Matildas are the number one ranked team in Asia, ninth overall in the FIFA rankings, and are competing in their fourth Olympics.

They are managed by Tony Gustavsson, who won an Olympic gold medal as the USA assistant coach at the 2012 London Games. He also tasted success as the USA lifted the Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019.

Australia are 7/2 to beat Great Britain and the Great Britain v Australia betting tips draw odds are 13/5.

Great Britain v Australia head-to-head

The Great Britain v Australia betting tips stats show Australia have won one of the last five meetings with England, whose players make up all bar three of the GB squad.

Their last meeting, in October 2018 at Craven Cottage, resulted in a 1-1 draw, with Fran Kirby’s 21st-minute strike cancelled out six minutes from time by Australia’s Clare Polkinghorne.

England won three of the previous four meetings, with Australia’s last win – a 2-0 friendly victory in Germany – coming 10 years ago.

Four of their last five meetings saw fewer than three goals scored in total and it is 17/20 this will be the case in the quarter-final.

It is 11/2 the game will end in another 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Kim Little, Scotland, Great Britain v Australia betting tips

Great Britain v Australia team news

Riise had the luxury of rotating players against Canada, with the versatile Rachel Daly starting on the right flank, while Georgia Stanway was to the left of Nikita Parris, who was deputising for Ellen White. Jill Scott was given the nod in midfield as Wales’ Sophie Ingle captained the side for the first time.

With no significant injures, White will certainly be recalled along with key midfielder Kim Little (pictured above) for the quarter-final.

Great Britain are 4/7 to score the first goal and 29/20 to keep a clean sheet, as they did in three of their last five meetings with the Matildas.

Gustavsson is likely to have a full-strength squad, so 18-year-old forward Mary Fowler – a last-minute addition to the line-up against the United States – will likely be replaced by Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord.

Australia are 33/20 to score the first goal and 12/5 to score two or more goals.

Great Britain v Australia key battles

The Great Britain v Australia betting tips deduces that Australia’s creativity comes from their wide players and that will be key in isolating defenders.

Cutting off the supply to Chelsea’s Sam Kerr, the Matildas’ star striker, will be crucial.

Kerr leads the team with 45 international goals in 95 caps. She has been in directly involved in every goal Australia has scored so far at the Tokyo Games.

Australia are Evens to win or draw the match on the Double Chance market.

The United States sat back against Australia, who had given away a couple of goals on the counter-attack earlier in the group phase.

Great Britain may employ similar tactics. They are better balanced in the midfield areas and the odds for GB to win but concede are 7/4.
