Preview and odds for Sunday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup match

The third quarter-final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup sees unbeaten Costa Rica take on free-scoring Canada and we look at some potential Costa Rica v Canada betting tips.

Costa Rica topped Group C with maximum points to reach the last eight, while Canada won two of their three games to finish second in Group B.

The quarter-final, which takes place on Sunday night at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas, is live on Premier Sports 1 and kicks off at midnight BST.

Costa Rica v Canada match odds

Needing only a draw to win their group after beating Guadeloupe 3-1 and Suriname 2-1, Costa Rica left little doubt, taking all three points with a 1-0 victory over 2015 and 2017 finalists Jamaica.

Bryan Ruiz’s second-half header proved the difference and put Costa Rica on course for a clash with Canada, who last won the Gold Cup in 2000.

Costa Rica, beaten semi-finalists in 2017, are 6/4 to win this match in 90 minutes.

Their final group game could have gone either way. The turning point came when Jamaica striker Andre Gray crashed a shot off the post and two minutes later Costa Rica got the winner, with Ariel Lassiter providing a perfect cross for 35-year-old veteran Ruiz to nod home.

Luis Fernando Suarez’s side have made it out of the group stage for a 12th successive time, bouncing back from a six-match winless streak which included a 4-0 friendly defeat to the United States prior to the Gold Cup tournament.

The Colombian coach was installed in June after Los Ticos suffered back-to-back shootout losses in the semi-finals and the third-place match at the CONCACAF Nations League.

Though they have now made it to the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup on seven successive occasions, age is starting to catch up with this team.

After making the quarter-finals at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Costa Rica were seeded as high as 15th in the world in between February and March 2015, but today they have dropped to number 50.

Yet having come into this tournament having won one of their previous 10 matches against CONCACAF sides, Suarez appears to have instilled some confidence into the side and for Costa Rica v Canada betting tips, odds of 19/5 for Costa Rica to win with three goals or more scored in 90 minutes may be of interest.

Canada have been in blistering form of late, scoring 34 goals in their previous eight games – all victories – before losing 1-0 to the United States in their final Group B game. They are 15/8 to win this tie in 90 minutes.

With the likes of Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies on Olympics duty, Cyle Larin has filled in, leading the Canada attack with three goals in the group phase and he now has 19 for his country.

Canada started their Gold Cup campaign with a 4-0 win over Martinique, followed by a 4-1 win over Haiti, a game in which Junior Hoilett (below) scored his 12th international goal.

Costa Rica v Canada head-to-head

Canada have clearly shown improvement over the past year or so, and their head-to-head record stands at nine wins for Canada, eight wins for Costa Rica, with four draws. The draw is available at 2/1 this time.

Given Canada’s recent scoring exploits, the Costa Rica v Canada betting tips odds of 11/8 for there to be three or more goals scored in total seem fair and it is Evens for both teams to score in 90 minutes.

Canada have scored at least once in the first half in seven of their last nine games and are 21/5 to be in front at half-time and full-time in this clash.
