Fulham v Middlesbrough betting tips: Silva service for Mitrovic
Preview and odds for Sunday’s EFL Championship match
Fulham bid to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking under Marco Silva as we look at some potential Fulham v Middlesbrough betting tips.
Relegated last season under Scott Parker, Fulham are starting a new era while Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough will hope to improve on their 10th-placed finish last year.
The game takes place at Craven Cottage on Sunday and is live on Sky Sports, with a 1.30pm kick-off.
Fulham v Middlesbrough match odds
There have been plenty of changes at Fulham since their relegation after one season in the top flight and they are 10/11 to get off to a winning start.
The Whites spent almost £13million on Liverpool winger Harry Wilson and have brought in goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from Tottenham on a free transfer, but have lost a few loanees such as Alphonse Areola, Ademola Lookman and Josh Maja.
Silva is still looking to bolster the squad before the end of the transfer window and while they played some attractive football for the most part, Fulham scored a total of nine league goals at Craven Cottage last season – the worst home tally in the Premier League.
Middlesbrough have brought in central midfielder Martin Payero from Argentina’s top-flight side Banfield. The 22-year-old impressed for Argentina’s U23 side at the Tokyo Olympics and he is one of six summer signings.
Warnock (pictured below) has played a back three in pre-season and it has paid dividends, with Paddy McNair, Grant Hall and Dael Fry looking solid. It has allowed Marcus Tavernier and Matt Crooks to play a free role in behind centre-forward Uche Ikpeazu, who is 16/5 to score at any time.
Fulham v Middlesbrough head-to-head
The last meeting at Craven Cottage in February 2020 saw Fulham win 1-0 and it is 11/2 that this is the scoreline on Sunday.
Boro have failed to score in their last three meetings and they are 17/10 to get the first goal in the game.
Nine of the last 12 meetings have yielded under three total goals and it is 7/10 that this will be the case again.
Fulham v Middlesbrough team news
Boro have a few fitness concerns, notably to their left-sided players. Marc Bola has been back in training this week but has not played at all in pre-season, while Hayden Coulson is injured.
Marcus Tavernier is more of an attacking wing-back than a full-back, yet could fill the role despite missing two pre-season outings.
Sammy Ameobi, who arrived from Nottingham Forest, is also not expected to be fit, and both Marcus Browne and Darnell Fisher are long-term absentees for Boro, who are 13/4 to keep a clean sheet.
Fulham will be without injured skipper Tom Cairney in the middle of the park, while defender Terence Kongolo is also out for the season opener.
Aleksandar Mitrovic is set to start up front while Neeskens Kebano and Anthony Knockaert could start out wide, with last season’s top scorer Bobby De Cordova-Reid (with five goals) a 15/8 chance to score at any time.
Fulham v Middlesbrough key battles
The polite way of saying this is that Mitrovic looked out of sorts throughout much of last term, managing just three goals.
The Serbia frontman scored 26 goals when Fulham were promoted and he needs to find his spark again. He has plenty to prove now and is 13/5 to score Fulham’s first goal.
Fulham’s biggest concern will be their ability to defend set-pieces, and Warnock’s side love to get the ball into the box early and often.
