Our Matchday Squad journalist will be covering Denmark throughout Euro 2020

There is still a lot of optimism in Denmark before the first game against Finland at home in Parken in Copenhagen. In the two friendlies last week, we drew 1-1 against Germany in Austria and won 2-0 against Bosnia at home.

The Danish team didn’t impress in any of the games against opponents with quite a few reserves, however, they didn’t lose and played quite well in the second half of both games.

Even though the goals were scored by three of the attackers in the squad, Yussuf Poulsen, Martin Braithwaite and Andreas Cornelius, it didn’t change the big question: who will score the necessary goals? The defence is very strong, but the attacking play has not been running as smoothly as hoped.

There is also still doubt about who will play as the striker in Kasper Hjulmand’s 4-3-3 system. FC Copenhagen’s Jonas Wind only played the last 45 minutes against Bosnia, but he could still take the spot ahead of Kasper Dolberg from Nice, but it is close.

There are no injuries in the starting eleven, and it is expected that Denmark will come out attacking against Finland to get a good start and also create a good atmosphere among the spectators in Parken and the fans in front of the big screens around the city.

Thomas Pyndt

Thomas is a freelance writer from Denmark and has followed both Danish and international football as a journalist since 1996.

He covered the World Cup-finals in both Berlin and Moscow and has also been to every Euro-tournament since 2000 with the competition in 2008 as his favourite – even though neither Denmark nor England made it – due to some amazing attacking football and the beautiful setting in Switzerland, where he was situated.

He will be following the Denmark national team from Copenhagen, where they will play all three group games in the national stadium Parken against Finland, Belgium and Russia.

He is looking forward to writing about the Danish team for as long as they last in the tournament.
