Preview and odds for this week’s Europa League games

The UEFA Europa League sees 16 games take place in matchday two on Thursday and we look at a selection of those matches in our Europa League betting tips.

Celtic v Bayer Leverkusen

Celtic were 2-0 up in Betis in their opening Group G fixture but ended up on the wrong end of a 4-3 result on matchday one.

Having been held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee United at Celtic Park on Saturday, Ange Postecoglou’s side sit sixth in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind Rangers after seven games.

They are also 27/10 underdogs to beat Bayer Leverkusen and, given their record against German opposition, it is hardly surprising. Celtic have won just four of their 24 matches against German opponents in European competition (D5 L15), although all four of those matches came on home soil.

Celtic have lost 10 of their last 17 home matches in major European competition (W7) since drawing 3-3 with Manchester City in the Champions League in 2016-17.

In contrast, Bayer Leverkusen have won five of their last seven away matches in major European competitions, although they did lose their last such match against Young Boys in the last 32 of the Europa League last season. They are 19/20 to win, having beaten Ferencvaros 2-1 at home in their first group clash.

Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga, three points behind Bayern Munich, having won four of their six games and drawn another. The draw is on offer at odds of 27/10 in the Europa League betting tips.

Sparta Prague v Rangers

Rangers bid to kickstart their Europa League campaign, having gone down to a 2-0 home defeat by Lyon on matchday one.

Steven Gerrard’s side, who won 1-0 at Dundee on Saturday to remain top of the Scottish Premiership, have only lost one of their last nine away matches in the Europa League (W4 D4), and were unbeaten on the road in the competition throughout 2020-21. They are 13/8 to win in Prague.

Sparta Prague were unbeaten in the group stages of the Europa League in home matches between 2010-11 and 2016-17 (W10 D5), but were beaten twice in three such matches last season.

They earned a good point in a 0-0 draw at Brondby on matchday one and enter this clash on the back of a 5-2 win at Zlin on Saturday.

Sparta Prague’s 2-1 defeat by Rangers in the European Cup in October 1991 was the last time they lost to a Scottish side. They are since unbeaten in six matches against Scottish opposition (W5 D1) and are 33/20 to win this time. The draw is on offer at 23/10.

Sturm Graz v PSV Eindhoven

Sturm Graz will look to gain their first points in Europa League Group B after going down 1-0 at Monaco on matchday one.

The Austrian side have been in fine form since, however, winning each of their next three Austrian Bundesliga games to nil and scoring 12 goals in the process. They enter this clash on the back of Sunday’s 3-0 away win at Rapid Vienna and are 15/4 to win.

Sturm Graz have lost five of their six home matches in the Europa League though, including each of the last three.

PSV are 7/10 to win. They were held to a 2-2 draw by Real Sociedad in Eindhoven on matchday one, and were beaten 2-1 at Willem II in the Eredivisie on Saturday. It was their second defeat in three outings and they sit fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Ajax after seven games.

PSV have only lost three of their 14 matches against Austrian opposition in European competition (W9 D2), although all three defeats came on the road. It is 3/1 that the game ends in a draw.

Of more concern is their penchant for giving away goals on their travels. They have conceded exactly four goals in four of their last six away games in the Europa League. PSV are 2/1 to win but concede.
