England Women v Austria Women betting tips, preview and odds

The hosts kick things off in the opening match of Women’s Euro 2022 and we have studied the odds to pick out some England Women v Austria Women betting tips.

A capacity 74,120 crowd is expected at Old Trafford on Wednesday, just over a year after the stadium hosted its first ever women’s football match.

It will be a flagship moment for the sport in England but can the Lionesses send the majority of the crowd home happy?

Familiar foes

England played Austria in a World Cup qualifier last November, running out 1-0 winners thanks to an Ellen White goal at the Stadium of Light.

The home side are expected to kickstart their tournament with another victory and are just 2/11 for the win.

Austria made their debut at the 2017 Euros in the Netherlands and surprised many by reaching the semi-finals but they will face a tough challenge to get out of their group which also features Norway this time round.

Their squad boasts Women’s Super League experience in the form of Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger and club-mate Laura Wienroither, as well as captain Viktoria Schnaderbeck, who left the Gunners this summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at Tottenham.

Austria are 18/1 to cause an upset here and 21/5 to avoid defeat but England dominated possession in November’s meeting and another win to nil at 4/5 kicks off our England Women v Austria Women betting tips.

Wiegman eyeing more success

Having reached the Euros final twice before, in 1984 and 2009, the Lionesses will be hoping to go one better this time under the guidance of Sarina Wiegman, who guided her native Netherlands to European Championship glory in 2017 and the World Cup final two years later.

Under Wiegman, England are unbeaten in 14 matches, winning 12 and scoring 84 goals to just three conceded. Their three warm-up games saw them score 12 times.

The form of Ellen White up front will be key to Wiegman’s side’s hopes of progressing far in the tournament.

The team’s record scorer with 50 goals had a disrupted build-up after contracting coronavirus but has recovered in time for Wednesday’s match and will be out to add to her international tally.

Assuming she starts, White will be a popular pick to score first at 14/5 while she is 4/1 to score two goals or more.

England will be hoping to get off to a good start ahead of next Monday’s clash against Norway at Brighton and then their meeting with Northern Ireland at Southampton the following Friday.

The Norway match looks the toughest in the group and Wiegman may have one eye on that of England take control early on.

Let’s take a chance on 9/4 for the first half to have the most goals as the last of our England Women v Austria Women betting tips.
