Preview and odds for Sunday’s match

England return to the Riverside Stadium to complete their preparations for the European Championship with the visit of Romania for a friendly.

Gareth Southgate’s men beat Austria 1-0 at the same venue on Wednesday night and an expected stronger team will hope to record a confidence-boosting victory ahead of their Euro 2020 opener against Croatia.

Sunday’s match is live on ITV and kicks off at 5pm as we highlight a few potential England v Romania betting tips.

England v Romania match odds

Thursday’s result extended England’s winning run to five matches and they are 2/7 for a sixth straight win as they welcome back their Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea contingent.

The Three Lions needed until the 56th minute to make the breakthrough against Austria thanks to Bukayo Saka but kept a fourth clean sheet in five matches, with an England win to nil on Sunday available at 19/20.

Romania are 11/1 for a shock win in Middlesbrough in what is their final game before World Cup qualifying resumes in September, having failed to qualify for this summer’s European Championship.

They slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Georgia on Wednesday and have now lost three in a row after losing their previous two World Cup qualifiers.

A 1-0 defeat at home to Germany in March was no disgrace though and they were leading Armenia 2-1 when they were reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute before conceding two late goals.

Five of their last six defeats have been by a single goal and Romania can be backed at 19/20 with a two-goal start on the handicap, while England are 13/5 to win by exactly one goal.

England v Romania head-to-head

Few teams can boast a record against England as strong as Romania so history suggests this could be a tricky test for Southgate’s team.

Romania are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with England, with three wins in that time including in the two most recent encounters.

Romania were 2-1 winners against the Three Lions at the 1998 World Cup and also claimed a 3-2 victory at Euro 2000 thanks to a late penalty.

England have failed to beat Romania since 1970 and there have been goals at both ends in the last four meetings, a trend which is 21/20 to continue.

Previous XI

England vs Romania - Football tactics and formations
England: Pickford, Alexander-Arnold, Trippier, Mings, Coady, Rice, Saka, Bellingham, Grealish, Lingard, Kane.

Romania: Vlad, Ganea, Nedelcearu, Chiriches, Sorescu, Maxim, Hagi, Marin, Tanase, Olaru, Alibec.

Key battles

Vladimir Chiriches, Romania

Romania’s defence could be in for a busy evening but captain Vlad Chiriches will hope his two-year spell at Tottenham helps him cope with the threat of his former team-mate Harry Kane.

Chiriches may have struggled at Spurs and then Napoli but he has been a regular in Serie A for Sassuolo, where he has spent the season on loan.

Kane is 21/10 to open the scoring and 8/13 in the anytime goalscorer odds while this is a good chance for Raheem Sterling to boost his hopes of a starting place against Croatia and he is 9/2 to break the deadlock.
