England v Iran betting tips

The Three Lions are the overwhelming favourites to start their quest to lift a first World Cup since 1966 with a win as we analyse the odds to pick out some England v Iran betting tips.

England are 7/1 to win the tournament after reaching the semi-finals in 2018 and also finishing runners-up at Euro 2020.

The match at the Khalifa International Stadium kicks off at 1pm and is live on the BBC.

England can lay down a marker

After near misses in their last two tournaments, England will be looking to go all the way in Qatar and end 56 years of hurt.

They came through qualifying with flying colours, finishing six points clear of Poland with eight wins and two draws in 10 matches.

But England ran into problems in the Nations League as Gareth Southgate chopped and changed in a bid to look at more of his squad with the World Cup in mind.

They failed to win in four games, drawing with Italy and Germany while suffering dismal defeats to Hungary home and away.

That included a 4-0 loss at Molineux, leaving England with just one goal in that winless sequence and questions asked about Southgate’s ability as boss.

After that match, he said: “To be successful in Qatar would be sweet whatever happens so of course I’ll use it as fuel.

“When you have disappointment and you read negativity, you of course want to fight and prove people wrong but I’ve done that all my life, so there’s not an extra incentive because of a night like tonight.”

It will be imperative England start well, especially with tricky games against the USA and Wales to come.

They’ve won both openers at the last two major tournaments by one goal but they will be looking to send a strong message to their rivals early doors.

Southgate’s side to score in both halves at 5/4 kicks off our England v Iran predictions.

Iran an unknown package

While many people will not know much about Iran, they caught the eye during qualifying for Qatar.

They finished two points ahead of South Korea, for whom Tottenham forward Heung-min Son stars, and conceded only four goals in their 10 outings.

Iran played at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, exiting at the group stage, but they did pick up a notable win over Morocco in Russia.

Feyenoord’s Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Bayer Leverkusen’s Sardar Azmoun and Porto’s Mehdi Taremi are the dangermen for Iran.

The Three Lions should still have enough to keep them out and a win to nil appeals at 20/21.

England v Iran meetings

This will be England’s first meeting with Iran.

Opening games at major competitions are often cagey affairs but Southgate’s men can lay down a marker here and over 3.5 goals at 9/4 completes our England v Iran betting tips.
