Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham betting tips: Hammers face Europa League test

| 14.09.2021

Preview and odds for Thursday’s Europa League clash

West Ham begin their Europa League campaign with a trip to Croatia and we have looked at the odds to bring you some Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham betting tips.

This will be the Hammers’ first Europa League group stage campaign following a season which brought them a record Premier League points haul and sixth place while Dinamo Zagreb won their domestic title by a distance last term.

Thursday’s game takes place at Stadion Maksimir and is live on BT Sport 2, with an 5.45pm BST kick-off.

Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham match odds

Despite a solid start to the Premier League season, West Ham face a tough opponent in their first real European action (excluding qualifiers) since 2006-07.

Croatian champions Zagreb are unbeaten in their last 13 Europa League group-stage matches (W9 D4), winning their last four and only conceding once in eight.

They also top their domestic table in the early going, winning five (D1 L1) of their opening seven games in the HNL and are 2/1 to defeat the Hammers.

They are 33/1 to lift Europe’s secondary club competition and 13/5 to top Group H.

West Ham, 14/1 third favourites to win the Europa League behind Leicester (11/1) and Napoli (11/1), face arguably their toughest away game in a group which also comprises Belgian Cup winners Genk and Austrian Bundesliga runners-up Rapid Vienna.

The Hammers, who are 4/5 to win their group, have made a decent start to their Premier League campaign and sit eighth in the table with eight points after their 0-0 draw at Southampton on Saturday.

They have showed plenty of attacking threat this term, scoring four at Newcastle and at home against Leicester while netting twice in a draw against Crystal Palace.

They are 6/5 to win the game while the draw is available at 12/5 in the Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham betting tips.

Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham head-to-head

Dinamo Zagreb and West Ham have never faced each other in European competition.

Zagreb have met English opponents on 17 previous occasions in Europe (including qualifiers) and lost 11 (W3 D3), though they beat Tottenham 3-0 – with Marin Leovac (pictured above) among the scorers – in last season’s Europa League.

West Ham have only faced one Croatian opponent before, winning 6-1 on aggregate against NK Osijek in the UEFA Cup first round in September 1999.

Though arguably the best West Ham sides of the mid-1980s were denied European football – a five-year ban on English clubs was imposed by UEFA following the Heysel disaster – they did eventually get back into Europe and competed in the UEFA Cup between 1999 and 2006.

However, they lost their last four UEFA Cup games all to nil and it is 9/2 that Dinamo Zagreb win by that method in the Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham betting tips.

The last time the Hammers scored in the UEFA Cup was in 1999 when they beat NK Osijek 3-1. It is 11/10 they net two or more in the game.

Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham key battles

West Ham have looked defensively vulnerable have conceded in 13 of their last 15 competitive games.

It is 8/13 that both sides score and 16/5 that David Moyes’ side win but concede in the Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham betting tips.

Keeping a clean sheet has been problematic and although the arrival of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea provides cover, it is 3/5 the hosts win or draw this game in the Double Chance market.

Dinamo Zagreb may find it tough to keep Michail Antonio quiet.

The striker both scored and assisted in each of the Hammers’ first three Premier League games, although he will be suspended for the Premier League clash with Manchester United after being dismissed late on at St Mary’s.

Pablo Fornals has also been a threat. He scored four goals in his last five Premier League games and is 4/1 to score at any time while Antonio is 7/4 in the same market.
