Odds and preview for Nations League tie

After scraping a win against Iceland in their Nations League opener, England will be looking for a more convincing display when they face Denmark tonight.

But in these unusual circumstances, many of Gareth Southgate’s squad aren’t properly match fit yet – Harry Kane played his first minutes of pre-season against Iceland. Having also had a shorter break than usual this summer, Southgate is set to ring the changes in defence and midfield.

Match Odds

England are 11/10 to win and make it two wins from two. The hosts are 27/10 outsiders, while we go 9/4 for the draw.

The Three Lions have won each of their previous four games to nil – they’re 9/4 to do so again here.

Harry Kane is 7/2 to score first or 8/5 anytime, while Danny Ings is 9/5 to open his international account. Raheem Sterling is 2/1 to follow up Saturday’s winner with another goal.

Andreas Cornelius looks to be the Dane’s main threat at 3/1 anytime, with Christian Eriksen at 16/5 to get on the scoresheet.

England have tended to line up in a 4-3-3 in recent times, but they’re reportedly set to revert to the back three that served them so well in the 2018 World Cup tonight.

The shift in formation could pave the way for Wolves captain Conor Coady to make his England debut. Southgate has previously said he doesn’t fit into the side when they play with a back four, but he could be ideal for this set-up, given he essentially plays as a sweeper for his club.

Kalvin Phillips has also been tipped to make his debut in midfield after being so influential for Leeds. And with no natural left-sided defender in the squad, Ainsley Maitlaid-Niles could also feature.

The attack should look more familiar, with Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and Jadon Sancho all in line to start again as Southgate looks to take three points ahead of next month’s clash with Belgium. With Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood’s withdrawal from the squad, Danny Ings is also likely to get some time on the pitch.

The short turnaround between matches means changes are inevitable, but Denmark have the quality to exploit any uncertainty from the visitors.

Christian Eriksen

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Andreas Christensen will be well known to English audiences, while Yussuf Poulsen and Andreas Cornelius could cause real problems for a defence that hasn’t played together before.

With Belgium clear favourites to beat Iceland, England can’t afford to lose any ground in Group A2. They have had some distractions during this international break but returning home with six points from six would be a good week’s work.
