Coventry v Nottingham Forest betting tips: Waghorn boosts Sky Blues’ attack

| 03.08.2021

Preview and odds for Sunday’s Championship match

Mark Robins’ Sky Blues return to the Ricoh Arena after a two-year absence as we look at some potential Coventry v Nottingham Forest betting tips.

Coventry made a solid return to the Championship after an eight-year absence, finishing 16th last term, while Forest will be desperate for a promotion push after spending more than two decades out of the top tier.

The game takes place at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday and is live on Sky Sports, with a kick-off time of 4.30pm.

Coventry v Nottingham Forest match odds

Coventry will look to build upon an assured return to the Championship and are 31/20 to get the season off to a winning start.

The problem for Robins’ team last season was a lack of goals – they found the net a mere 49 times with Tyler Walker top-scoring with seven goals.

Although they completed the signing of Brighton’s Viktor Gyokeres, who was on loan last year, he managed just three goals, but the arrival of Martyn Waghorn on a free transfer from Derby looks a smart move as he has plenty of Championship experience.

A robust centre-forward is just what Coventry needed and the 31-year-old could prove to be a valuable acquisition.

Forest have also had a relatively quiet summer in the transfer market, with United States goalkeeper Ethan Horvath their only notable signing.

Lewis Grabban, Nottingham Forest, Coventry v Forest betting tips

Like Coventry, Chris Hughton’s side had far too many draws last season – only Millwall had more than Forest’s 16 – and they finished in a disappointing 17th place.

Again, Forest had a problem at the top end of the pitch, with proven striker Lewis Grabban (pictured above) netting just six times.

In Coventry v Nottingham Forest betting tips, the visitors are 21/10 to win the game while the draw is on offer at 21/10 but there have been just three stalemates in the last 22 meetings.

Coventry v Nottingham Forest head-to-head

Forest have a good record against the Sky Blues, winning seven of the last 10 meetings, with one game drawn.

They won both clashes by 2-1 scorelines last season and it is 10/1 that it will be the same score this time.

Four of the last six clashes yielded three or more total goals, and it is 11/8 that there will be three or more in the game on Sunday.

Both sides scored in eight of the last 15 meetings and it is Evens that this is the case again.

Coventry v Nottingham Forest team news

City were sweating on the fitness of centre-backs Michael Rose and Dominic Hyam after they had their pre-season disrupted by Covid-19, yet they managed to see playing time in their final pre-season game against Wolves and are in contention to start.

Matt Godden and Liam Kenny missed that 2-1 defeat through injury and are less certain to start, but Jodi Jones has seemingly recovered from an ACL injury which kept him out all of last season and is set to play.

Forest have an issue at left-back with their only senior option, Tyler Blackett, injured and likely to head to MLS side FC Cincinnati, according to reports.

Centre-back Loic Mbe Soh could fill in, although youngster Jayden Richardson saw plenty of time in that position during pre-season.

Forest are 2/1 to keep a clean sheet and 8/13 to either win or draw the game in the Double Chance market.

Coventry v Nottingham Forest key battles

Waghorn goes up against Joe Worrall and Scott McKenna, who are among the best central-defensive partnerships in the Championship.

Forest only lost three of the 11 games when they were deployed together in the heart of defence last season.

Waghorn is 13/5 to score at any time and 20/1 to score two or more.
