Preview and odds for midweek Champions League matches

The Champions League group phase begins this week so we look at some possible Champions League betting tips.

Chelsea are the European champions following their 1-0 win over Manchester City in last season’s final in Porto.

We preview a trio of Tuesday and Wednesday’s big games.

Barcelona v Bayern Munich

These two giants share Group F with Benfica and Dynamo Kiev.

Bayern Munich, winners of the last nine editions of the Bundesliga and six-time European champions, defeated Barcelona 8-2 at the Nou Camp when the teams last met in the quarter-finals of this competition in 2019-20.

They are 23/20 favourites to win on the road and 7/1 to lift the Champions League.

With Hansi Flick leaving to take charge of the national side, Julian Nagelsmann is now in the hot-seat at the Bavarian club, who hold a 7-2 all-time record against the Spanish side.

Two of their previous 11 meetings ended in draws and the odds are 27/10 the game will end in a draw this time in the Champions League betting tips.

The only time the teams have met in the group stage was in 1998-99. After losing 1-0 in Germany, Barca were also beaten 2-1 at the Nou Camp and failed to progress to the knockout stage.

Barcelona are in financial trouble and offloaded star names Lionel Messi (PSG) and Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) this summer and are 25/1 to win the Champions League.

Though Ronald Koeman has brought in attacking reinforcements, including Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Luuk de Jong, he is under pressure to produce results quickly.

Barcelona are 21/10 to win and with nine of their previous 11 encounters seeing three goals or more scored in total, it is 1/2 over 2.5 goals will be netted this time.

Inter Milan v Real Madrid

Inter Milan are another team who are feeling the pinch.

They have offloaded stars like Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi while manager Antonio Conte, who brought them their first Serie A title in 11 years, also left the San Siro and was replaced by Simone Inzaghi.

Inter are 29/20 to beat 13-time European champions Real Madrid, although both clubs would hope to progress to the knockout stages from Group D which also comprises Shakhtar Donetsk and Sheriff Tiraspol. They are 40/1 to win the Champions League.

Former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti (pictured above) is now in charge of Real Madrid, who have started their La Liga campaign well with seven points from their opening three games. They are 25/1 to win the Champions League.

Real, who pose a great attacking threat with Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard, are 7/4 to win in the Champions League betting tips while the draw is on offer at 12/5.

The pair have met on 17 previous occasions in Europe, with Inter recording six wins, two draws and one loss at home to Real Madrid – that reverse coming last season when they were beaten 2-0 at home and 3-2 away in the group stages.

Eight of their last 11 Champions League meetings saw fewer than three total goals and it is evens that no more than two goals will be scored this time.

Atletico Madrid v Porto

Atletico Madrid are 8/13 to win Wednesday’s clash and 25/1 to claim the Champions League.

They have lost just two of their last 11 home games against Portuguese opponents in European competition (W7 D2).

Porto,  200/1 to win the Champions League, could find it hard to breach a strong defence marshalled by Jan Oblak, who has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the competition (28) since his debut in 2014.

Atletico Madrid are 19/20 to not be breached.

Porto have a poor record against Spanish sides in Europe, winning just nine of their 31 games.

But they have won four of their last five away games in the group stage of the Champions League (L1 – to Manchester City last season). They are 24/5 to win and the draw is on offer at 13/5.

Griezmann has scored 21 goals in 48 Champions League appearances for Atletico Madrid and is worth a look to score at any time.
