Preview and odds for Wednesday’s Champions League clash

Liverpool face Atletico Madrid for a second time in Champions League Group B and we examine the odds to find some Liverpool v Atletico Madrid betting tips.

Jurgen Klopp’s side won the first meeting 3-2 in the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano and have a perfect record in three Champions League games this season so a victory would put them through to the knockout stages.

Wednesday’s clash takes place at Anfield and is live on BT Sport 2 at 8pm.

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid match odds

Two weeks ago, Liverpool came from 2-1 down to defeat Atletico 3-2 in Spain with two goals from Mohamed Salah and another from Naby Keita.

The result puts them within touching distance of the knockout phase and it is worth noting that Liverpool have only lost two of their 22 home games in the Champions League under Jürgen Klopp (W15 D5).

One of those came against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, losing 3-2 in the Round of 16 in 2019-20 as they were eliminated from the tournament.

However, Liverpool are 4/6 to win, despite being held 2-2 by Brighton at Anfield on Saturday when they allowed a two-goal lead to slip to the south-coast club.

Liverpool’s record against Spanish opposition in Europe is not great. They have only won two of their 13 home games against Iberian opponents in the European Cup/Champions League (D6 L5).

Atlético Madrid, who are 17/4 to win at Anfield, have won their last two away games in the group stage of the Champions League, and will be looking to win three in row on the road in the competition for only the second time under Simeone.

Atlético have also lost just once in their last six away trips to face English opponents in European competition (W2 D3), but that defeat did come in their most recent one – a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the Round of 16 last season.

Liverpool have had an extra day’s rest, since Atletico played on Sunday when beating Real Betis 3-0 at home. It leaves Atletico three points off the pace in La Liga.

They have drawn four of their 11 games in the Spanish top flight and the draw can be backed in Liverpool v Atletico Madrid betting tips at odds of 3/1.

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid head-to-head

Liverpool registered their first win over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League last time out, having drawn two and lost two of their first four meetings in the competition.

Atlético Madrid are unbeaten in their previous two games against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League (W1 D1), including a 3-2 victory in the Round of 16 on their last trip there in March 2020. They are 5/4 to win or draw the game on the Double Chance market.

The teams have met seven times and both teams scored in five of those games. It is 8/11 for that to happen again this time.

Only three of those seven meetings yielded three goals or more and it is 21/20 that there will be fewer than three total goals scored this time, which looks appealing for Liverpool v Atletico Madrid betting tips.

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid key battles

Liverpool must be on their guard for 90 minutes as Atletico have scored seven of their last nine away goals in the Champions League in the last six minutes of normal time or in added time. It is 15/8 that Atletico Madrid win either half.

Of course, the visitors will have the Salah problem to deal with. The Egyptian striker has scored 13 goals in 20 Champions League games at Anfield and is evens to score at any time.
