Our Matchday Squad journalist will be covering England throughout Euro 2020

Finally, a year later than planned, but here we go, England v Croatia at Wembley, and what a start it would be for England to get off to a winning start in front of their fans.

There is plenty of expectation surrounding this England side because of all the talented youngsters Gareth Southgate has at his disposal, the likes of Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Phil Foden, added to the experience of Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson, it will be interesting to see what starting eleven he goes with on Sunday.

There are one or two injury concerns for Gareth, Harry Maguire in particular, and if we have plenty of options in the forwards positions, defensively there are some question marks, but I think they can get off to a winning start, against the World Cup runners-up from 2018. That’s because Croatia have lost several big names from that team, and although they still have Luka Modric at the heart of their team, I expect England to take three points.

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
