Alan Shearer’s Czech Republic v England preview: England need Kane to start scoring

Our Matchday Squad journalist will be covering England throughout Euro 2020

England have to go and try to win this game against the Czech Republic now after their draw against Scotland. They lacked energy and spark in that game on Friday evening and Scotland were the better team overall.

It was a tired performance after all the positivity of the Croatia game but football can do that to you and they now have another very important game coming up.

I think Gareth Southgate will make changes off the back of that and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Jack Grealish in the starting XI. England will remain calm, they have four points from two games without conceding a goal, and victory will ensure they stay at Wembley for the last sixteen too.

The area of concern is the final third of the pitch and if England are to go deep in this tournament, they need Kane to start scoring goals.

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
