England’s FA finally decided to hand Gareth Southgate a permanent four-year deal, worth a reported £2m per year, to be new Three Lions boss after he temporarily took the reins after Sam Allardyce’s early departure.

Former Middlesbrough and England Under-21 head coach Southgate’s contract takes him past Euro 2020, meaning he’ll get at least two chances at claiming major silverware with the 2018 World Cup in Russia taking place two years before.
The Three Lions currently top their World Cup qualifying Group F by two points after four games, so are well on their way to reaching the finals.

After recently rejecting becoming new MK Dons boss, it seems that the Liverpool legend is not quite ready for a top position, so being part of the Three Lions’ backroom staff could be the perfect option for now.

Rooney to retire from England before 2018 World Cup
Meanwhile, current England captain Wayne Rooney recently announced that he’d finally give up playing international football in 2018 after the World Cup final, for which he is odds-on at 1/2 to follow through doing.
However, after his latest controversy which could end up him being stripped of the captaincy, the most capped outfield Three Lion star may decide to hang up his England boots sooner.
He is just six caps behind ex-keeper Peter Shilton’s record 125 appearances, so is 6/4 to retire before the next major finals.
Next permanent England captain
As mentioned above, with Southgate getting the job and Rooney potentially being stripped of the captaincy, the new England boss may need to pick a new permanent skipper.
Jordan Henderson is the heavy odds-on 1/4 favourite, having taken the armband on a couple occasions before, while he is also the current vice-captain.
Chelsea’s Gary Cahill (7/1) is next on the list, with fellow centre back Chris Smalling (14/1) among the top five favourites.
