Villans seek fifth boss since O’Neill exit
Aston Villa have sacked Tim Sherwood after eight months in charge, and the search for his successor has already begun.
Coral football experts look at the next Villans manager market and identify five candidates to take over at the West Midlands outfit, who will make their fifth permanent appointment in as many years since Martin O’Neill left.
Brendan Rodgers
Recently sacked by Liverpool, the Northern Irishman could make a swift return to coaching at Villa and it would be interesting to see what he could do.
At 4/1 to take over, it remains to be seen if Rodgers fancies a relegation scrap, having come close to winning the Premier League title at Anfield.
David Moyes
Former Everton boss Moyes is another name that keeps cropping up and, having forged contacts during his time in Spain and stabilised the Toffees when he took over (taking them as high as fourth), he could be tempted by a new project in England.
Reckoned to be the first-choice to succeed Sherwood at Villa, Moyes has been made an early 6/4 favourite by Coral, but now drifted to 4/1.
Nigel Pearson
Would relish the opportunity of a new challenge having been let go by Midlands and relegation rivals Leicester City.
Pearson was almost solely responsible for the Foxes’ revival towards the end of last season, even if his methods were somewhat unorthodox. He could be exactly what Villa need to get to start getting results, and Pearson is 10/1 to be their next boss.
Michael Laudrup
Danish playing great Laudrup was inspirational while at Swansea and his in-depth knowledge of players across Europe could prove pivotal in the transfer market.
As well as this, 20/1 chance Laudrup is a fan of attractive football; something which Villa fans want to see once more. The jury is out, however, on whether he would bring much long-term stability, with a track record for walking away or being axed when the going got tough at other teams.
Harry Redknapp
A true Premier League favourite, ‘Arry has certainly done the rounds. Having managed West Ham United, Portsmouth, Tottenham and QPR among others, he has earned a reputation as a wheeler-dealer, putting together some good teams in his time.
Also rated a 20/1 chance to take over at Villa, Redknapp may be tempted by one last top-flight job, but there are other, younger candidates in front of him.
