Five players to aid Southampton’s Premier League title chase
Published:Southampton are 150/1 with Coral to win the Premier League. They are in third and 10 points off leaders Chelsea. Titles have been won by teams who have made up more of a deficit.
Ronald Koeman’s men are in an ideal position right now to think about pushing on. They have money to spend to strengthen, and the transfer window is open. The club is ambitious and the sky is the limit; rather than looking behind them, they are the type of setup that will aim high, though at the same time, take it one game at a time.
As a result, we suggest five players who Koeman could turn to this January, if he is serious about launching an assault for the Premier League title.
Inigo Martinez
Real Sociedad’s highly rated ball-playing centre back certainly fits the mould of a Southampton player and would build a great partnership for the currently injured Toby Alderweireld. The 23-year-old has the potential to become one of the best and is well thought of in Spain. He is a regular for his team and David Moyes isn’t likely to let him leave without a fight, though any bid over £15m would mean the Basque side can strengthen.
Jordy Clasie
Known as the “Dutch Xavi”, this says it all in regards to his style and ability. The 23-year-old Feyenoord midfielder would be a world class addition to the Saints side. His vision would be crucial to Southampton and give them that extra dimension all top teams have; the mastery to unlock a defence.
Roberto Firmino
Oozing with class, Hoffenheim’s 23-year-old attacking midfielder would be a fantastic addition and the Brazilian has been linked to a number of top European clubs. He is renowned for drifting into space and is tricky on the ball, though is likely to command a substantial fee.
Hugo Mallo
To provide cover and competition for Nathaniel Clyne, Celta Vigo talent Mallo is exactly the type of player Koeman likes. An energetic right back with pace to burn, the 23-year-old who is capped at Under-21 level for Spain would be an ideal signing and likely to be available for less than £5m.
Memphis Depay
Linked with Manchester United last summer, PSV Eindhoven attacker Depay has bundles of potential. With 16 goals already this season, across all competitions, he would give the Saints another option and link up well with recent signing Eljero Elia.
