Five destinations for Edin Dzeko if he makes Etihad exit

Published:

Following Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini’s statements over the uncertainty of frontman Edin Dzeko’s future with the 12/5 Premier League title challengers, Coral experts have come up with five clubs where the Bosnian striker could once again become a leading man.

Pellegrini said recently of Dzeko: “It’s not clear if he will continue here or not, but he is still working here with the whole squad.” So, as speculation mounts, here are our picks for poacher Dzeko’s next stop…

Arsenal
The Gunners have emerged as surprise contenders for Bosnia and Herzegovina hitman Dzeko, who would have a decent chance of usurping Olivier Giroud to lead Arsene Wenger’s attack, as opposed to biding his time on the Sky Blues bench.

A surprising stat shows the Man City striker played a full 90 minutes in the Premier League just twice last term, making his poor haul of four goals seem much more reasonable.

Perhaps not wishing to be bit-part player again, the 29-year-old may not want to fight for a starting spot, but Arsenal would be Dzeko’s most realistic chance of lifting the league title should he leave Manchester. Could he be the Gunners’ mooted mystery marksman?

Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund have lacked a target man with decent technique since Robert Lewandowski left to join bitter rivals Bayern Munich on a Bosman, and could restore some physical presence up top by buying Dzeko to complement Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Following lacklustre Lewandowski replacement Ciro Immobile’s loan to Sevilla, the German giants should be interested in a bringing a proven Bundesliga goal threat, who hit four goals against them in nine career clashes, to the Westenfalenstadion.

Roma
The Giallorossi (7/1 to win Serie A) are currently favourites to lure Dzeko, though a move seems to have stalled while the Romans concentrate on beating several Serie A clubs to Chelsea-owned winger Mohamed Salah, which could see their current striker Mattia Destro depart.

It was reported that City’s asking price was too high, but the Italian capital club are unlikely to give up that easily and could offer the out-of-favour forward plenty of game time, with just the underwhelming Seydou Doumbia standing in his way.

Napoli
The Campania club have shown they are willing to splash out on big-name striker before and, should current goal machine Gonzalo Higuain bid goodbye to Naples, Dzeko could be a potent replacement.

Napoli seem to be tussling for targets with rivals Roma and if they miss out on Salah could scupper the Giallorossi’ chances of Dzeko.

Wolfsburg
Is a Wolfsburg return on the cards for former hero Dzeko? Die Wolfe are on the up, but Dutch dangerman Bas Dost has yet to prove himself consistently over a full campaign, despite an impressive purple patch last season.

If the Lower Saxony side have real ambition to bring more trophies to the Volkswagen Arena a reunion with Sarajevo-born striker could provide much-needed depth, with Dzeko the perfect choice to spearhead a Bundesliga challenge. An impressive 85 strikes in 142 outings previously for Die Wolfe mean he should be more than welcome.
