We open the archive and look at the top five Federer final wins
Roger Federer defied the odds to get his hands on a fifth Australian Open title on Sunday, beating old foe Rafael Nadal in a pulsating five-set final in Melbourne. At 35-years-old plenty have suggested his better days are behind him, at 35-years-old plenty have been proven wrong time and again.
On the back of that stunning win, we take a look back at some of Federer’s most memorable Grand Slam final wins, reminding us just how good the Swiss star really is…..
2017 Australian Open
We must start with Sunday and Federer showed age is just a number when matching the ferocious pace of Nadal to grind out the win, courtesy of a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 result. Federer told the press after his historic win that the number of Grand Slams wasn’t important to him, it was about completing the comeback, beating Nadal, and showing he still has it. Promising to celebrate by partying like a rock star, he’s too old for that.
2007 Wimbledon
Another Roger vs Rafa classic and, you guessed it, another five-set thriller. The champion won in London that year thanks to a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, but the bare stats don’t do that one justice. The game remains one of the best Wimbledon finals of all time, and is yet another example of Fed’s ability to deliver when up against it.
2012 Wimbledon
Sticking with the jewel in the crown of world tennis, Wimbledon, and it’s not just Nadal that Federer has a grudge against, he’ll beat anyone on his day, especially in the final. Back when Andy Murray was a mere mortal, he had his Wimbledon dreams crushed by Fed-Ex, losing 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Poor Andy, but we all know he was to be just fine, after the tears.
2007 US Open
Federer is now a five-time US Open champion, but back in the days when he had only won the competition three times – how embarrassing – he came up against young-gun Novak Djokovic, and whipped the upstart into shape. 7-6, 7-6, 6-4, the Serb sensation is rarely seen on the wrong end of a bad beating, but he was that day.
2009 French Open
Roger only has one French Open winner’s medal at home, claiming the title back in 2009 with an impressive victory over Robin Soderling. 6-1, 7-6, 6-4, suggests a dominant performance from the tennis ace, but he had to grit his teeth midway through the match to win a hotly disputed second-set. That was the game changer, and the rest is history.
