Can anyone stop the Swiss?
The 30th edition of the Hopman Cup is serving up some fantastic tennis.
Stars including Roger Federer, Eugenie Bouchard, David Goffin and Coco Vandeweghe have all contributed to the action so far.
With just a few days of competition left, the Coral News Team take a look at the story so far, and examine whether the Swiss team can continue their highly impressive form.
Swiss on a roll
Switzerland are making only their second Hopman Cup appearance since 2002. But the pairing of Belinda Bencic and Federer look to be making up for lost time. The duo have whitewashed Japan and Russia and are well on their way to making the final for only the third time in the competition’s history.
Bencic has won both of her games so far and performed well above her WTA Ranking of 196. Meanwhile, eight-time Wimbledon champion Federer has seen off Yuichi Sugita and Karen Khachanov in straight-sets. Together, they’re unbeaten in both singles and pairs matches so far.
USA a potential stumbling block?
With the Swiss and the USA both in excellent form, it looks like being a straight fight between the pair to reach the final from Group B.
Federer will take on the veteran Pat Cash, while Bencic will face the exciting Vandeweghe. The two duos will then face off for what could be an all-important doubles match. If the USA can pull off a shock 3-0 win, they’ll make the final for the third time in four years.
All to play for in Group A
Belgium, Canada and Australia all still harbour hopes of progressing from Group A. While the trio all hold a solid chance of making it through, the Coral News Team think that it will be tough for any of them to topple Germany.
The Germans have a strong team and have already seen off the fancied Belgian pair 2-1. That included a straight-sets victory for Alexander Zverev against the impressive Goffin in the men’s singles. It’s Canada up next for the group leaders.
Angelique Kerber is 2/5 to beat Bouchard on Wednesday, while ATP Rank 3 Zverev is 3/10 to see off Vasek Pospisil. After the 20-year-old saw off Goffin in his opening match, he should make light work of the Russian. It’s a more attractive 4/6 for a German Doubles win.
