Marco Silva became Everton’s fourth permanent manager in a little over two years when he was appointed to the Goodison Park hotseat last week.
The Portuguese maestro has previously bossed Hull City and Watford in the Premier League and succeeds Sam Allardyce as Toffees coach.

Man management
Speak to anyone who has worked under Silva and they all say the same thing – they respect him. That may not seem like a big thing. But in an era where player power is so dominant, it’s an important quality to have in the back pocket.
Everton have a squad of players that have been unloved and misused by successive managers. Silva’s one-to-one man management and ability to improve players could prove to be the most important aspect of his appointment.
Nice football
All clubs want to play an attractive style of football. But how do you marry that with being a successful side? It’s tough. But the suggestion is that Silva can manage it.
The former right-back has won trophies with Estoril and Sporting Lisbon and a league title with Olympiacos in Greece. All the while his sides have played a high-tempo possession based game. He didn’t have the players at his disposal to implement those ideals to full effect at Hull City.
At Watford things started well before going downhill following Everton’s initial interest in November of last year. Now he’s settled. And he has a squad filled with talent to work with. The signs are positive for going forward.
Coaching
The ability to improve players is often overlooked in an era of big-money transfers and short-term signings. Not many managers can successfully point to a player that has significantly improved under their stewardship.
Silva can. The likes of Sam Clucas, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Tom Cleverly have all come on leaps and bounds thanks to the Portuguese tactician’s insightful approach. That bodes well for an Everton side brimming with young English quality.
It marks a shift from the likes of Allardyce and Ronald Koeman, both of whom were arguably lacking in their skills on the training pitch. Silva is fresh, knowledgeable and crucially knows how to get the best out of his players.
His appointment as manager isn’t so much a new dawn for Everton. It’s more steering them back along the path they should have been on all along.
