European Championships 2018: Great Britain’s best Gold medal hopes

Who can deliver glory this summer?
The top athletes of Team GB are on their marks for this summer’s European Championships – which takes place in the duel locations of Berlin and Glasgow.
It all kicks off on Thursday 2nd August. Ahead of a host of action – from athletics to swimming, cycling and more – the Coral News Team look at Britain’s best hopes of delivering Gold.
Hammer Throw – Sophie Hitchon
A senior Gold medal has eluded the 27-year-old so far, but that may not be the case for long.
The Burnley-born thrower followed up a fourth-placed finish in the 2015 World Championships with an Olympic Bronze 12 months later. And she went one better with a silver in this year’s Athletics World Cup.
Having set a New British Record four times in her career, Hitchon will be full of confidence ahead of the European Championships.
Cycling – Jason Kenny
The cycling star did it all at Rio 2016. Kenny picked up three Gold medals – in the Team Sprint, Individual Sprint and Keirin.
A man for the big occasion, the 30-year-old has now bagged at least one Gold at three successive Olympics. And with this his first major-stage appearance since 2016, he’ll be ready and raring to go.
The question might not be whether or not he tops the podium, but how many events he does it in.
Gymnastics – Max Whitlock
It was double delight in the Gold medal stakes for the supremely talented gymnast in Rio. He dominated in the Floor Exercise and Pommel Horse sections.
Whitlock also grabbed top prize on the Pommel Horse in the World Championships’ either side of that Rio triumph. That means the 25-year-old goes into this tournament at the peak of his powers.
Swimming – Adam Peaty
The 23-year-old has absolutely dominated the 100m breaststroke in recent times. At the Rio Olympics, he smashed his own World Record en route to the Gold.
Peaty has also proved himself a real force in the 50m breaststroke. That event wasn’t available two years ago in Brazil, but he’ll surely be one of the frontrunners for it at this summer’s European Championships.
Cycling – Laura Kenny
One half of British cycling’s power couple (alongside Jason), Laura Kenny (nee Trott) also picked up two Olympic Golds a couple of years ago. They came in the Team Pursuit and the Omnium – which she topped by a mammoth 24 points.
At 26-years-old, the best may still be to come from the Harlow native, who also dominated at this year’s National Track Championships.
