Sevilla dominate the UEFA Cup and Europa League winners list after making it a magnificent seven triumphs by edging out Roma.

Having been locked at 1-1 after extra-time in Budapest, the Spanish outfit prevailed 4-1 on penalties, with Yassine Bounou saving two spot-kicks.

Head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar commented: “I’m happy to be here, to have won for the club, which was having a hard time when we got here.”

Sevilla, who also lifted the trophy in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020, are unbeaten in Europa League finals and have four more victories than any other club.

Inter Milan, Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are all on three, while Spain are the most successful nation on 14, five clear of England and Italy.

Mendilibar became the oldest winning coach at 62 years and 78 days, eclipsing the previous record held by Maurizio Sarri, while Jesus Navas has featured in four of Sevilla’s victories.

The final of Europe’s second-tier competition was contested over two legs for 25 years but switched to a single game in 1998.
