Euro 2016 qualifier: Gibraltar to park the rock against Germany

Given that two of Gibraltar’s five 2016 European Championship qualifiers have ended 7-0 in their opponents’ (Poland and Republic of Ireland) favour, Coral have great odds of 5/2 (max stake £20) for Germany to beat them 6-0, 7-0 or 8-0.

However, the tiny British territory on Spain’s south coast have changed their style of play in recent matches, restricting Georgia, Croatia and even world champions Die Mannschaft away to scoring four times or less.

Gibraltar even managed their first competitive goal, which was an equaliser against Scotland last time out in the Euro qualifiers, although they eventually succumbed to a 6-1 defeat.

But these are all positive signs of improvement for a nation which has a total population of 30k, the smallest of any UEFA-recognised country. So, can the sporting mad territory be spurred on from their compatriots in Gibraltar’s recent first round win in the World Cup of Darts against Italy?

While GFA’s (their nickname) chances of victory (66/1) or even a draw (16/1) in their adopted home of Faro in Portugal are incredibly slim, they can take heart from the fact they only managed to lose 4-0 against a strong Germany team last time out in Nuremberg.

Bayern Munich duo Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze managed to get on the scoresheet that day, and the latter, who netted against the USA in a recent 2-1 loss, is a tempting 3/1 shout to net first.

Muller, meanwhile, is out of the squad, along with other stars such as Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and Benedikt Howedes.

However, Joachim Low still has a strong team to pick from, with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels and recent Juventus signing Sami Khedira available to him.

Lukas Podolski (10/3 to net first), Andre Schurrle (10/3) and Max Kruse (3/1) will provide better threats in front of goal, though.

For Gibraltar, they have only ever scored four senior times since gained UEFA recognition, coming from Casciaro brothers Lee and Kyle, as well as captain Roy Chipolina and Jake Gosling, who recently got promoted to the English Football League with Bristol Rovers. You can back them at 20/1, 20/1, 25/1 and 50/1 to net last respectively.

Stand-in skipper for the Croatia friendly Liam Walker, though, is by far and away GFA interim boss David Wilson’s main man, in the absence of Scunthorpe United’s Scott Wiseman, and the ex-Portsmouth playmaker will be hoping to get his first international goal.

Walker, a former Manchester United trialist, nearly caught out superstar stopper Neuer with a superb strike last time the two nations met, and is 25/1 to be on target last.

Victory for Germany is all-but certain, so you can still try make a few pence on the match by taking a dramatically heavy odds-on price of 1/100 for them to take three points and further enhance their progress from Group D. They are a more enticing 1/8 to win the pool.
