Goldream each-way value in Nunthorpe Stakes
Having run stormer last time out and with underfoot conditions to suit at York, backing Goldream each-way could well be the best value in a top class and wide-open renewal of the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes run over the flying 5f on day three of the Ebor Festival (15:40).
This Robert Cowell trained gelding showed progressive form last season, winning the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Doncaster on his return to action before going to to land the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Goldream showed plenty of pace in the latter to chase the leaders before throwing down a strong challenge from the furlong marker to get up, close home and beat Medicean Man by a short-head.
There was lots to like about the way seven-year-old dug deep and battled on gamely. He then lost little in defeat when a staying on 4 3/4 length fifth of 19 to Mecca’s Angel in this contest 12 months ago – on soft ground which was totally unsuitable.
Goldream went on to round off the campaign with a short-head success in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp where he had the re-opposing Muthmir, Pearl Secret, Sole Power and Take Cover in behind.
Excellent effort at Goodwood
The son of Oasis Dream has had just two runs this year, finishing ninth at Meydan before posting a really solid effort in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood last month when third to Take Cover.
Goldream travelled strongly in the latter until being unable to find any extra close home to be beaten just half a length.
That was his first run after a 125-day break and should have blow away the cobwebs to put him spot on for this.
The fast ground is also ideal, and another plus is that Goldream has bagged a good draw in stall two as low numbers have been favoured in sprints at the venue.
Limato a massive player if coping with drop back in trip
Limato was simply sensational when winning the Group 1 July Cup over 6f at Newmarket, so commands the utmost respect.
This Henry Candy trained four-year-old travelled strongly throughout and, after making good headway two from home, took up the running at the furlong marker to burst clear and score by two lengths.
Limato’s explosive turn of foot destroyed a top-class, 18-runner field, and the form of that race sets a clear standard in this line-up.
There is little doubt that Limato is an ultra-smart performer and he has now won seven of his 10 starts.
The big question is whether he will be as effective over the minimum trip against proven speedsters as he is to to race over it?
Profitable has plenty going for him
Profitable finished 3 1/2 lengths behind Limato when fourth in the July Cup, but lost little in defeat and may well reverse the form now dropped back in trip.
The Clive Cox trained colt is a real 5f specialist and all five of his career successes have come over that distance..
Prior to July Cup, the four-year-old had shown progressive form to win all three of his starts this season.
In the last of those, the son of Invincible Spirit posted a career-best effort when landing the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot by half-a-length.
Profitable tanked through the race and idled once hitting the front and could well have even more to offer.
