De Guzman’s agent confirms Sunderland in for former Swan midfielder
Published:It seems that Swansea City players don’t enjoy life after leaving for Serie A side Napoli, as internationals Michu and now Jonathan de Guzman’s spells there have been less than successful.
The latter could now return to the Premier League, with the likes of relegation chances with Coral Sunderland (1/2 odds-on favourites) and Bournemouth (12/5), as well as Ligue 1 outfit Marseille, heavily linked with the midfielder.
In fact, De Guzman’s agent Fabian Parisi even confirmed that a deal is in place for the Netherlands international to Sunderland, which would be an initial loan with an option to buy.
“It’s true there’s an agreement for the player to go on loan with a purchase option included for the English club, but we are all working towards finding a solution for De Guzman, who is not in the plans of [Napoli boss Maurizi] Sarri for this season,” he said.
“Sunderland is there and so is Marseille and there are other options,” Parisi added. “We will choose the best option for us and for Napoli. Jonathan is an attractive player in the transfer market and we will need a few more days to decide.”
If either the Black Cats or Cherries were to sign Canadian-born 27-year-old, they’d be signing a proven Premier League player, having spent two years with the Swans on loan from Villarreal from 2012-2014.
In those two seasons, he managed 16 goals and was deadly from set-pieces too, so would provide a lot for these potential relegation battlers in attack this term.
De Guzman only managed 11 league appearances for Napoli last term under then-manager Rafael Benitez, and is seemingly unfavoured by new boss Sarri, as confirmed by the midfielder’s agent.
Sunderland in particular look as though they need his services, having lost their opening two league games this campaign to Leicester City and Norwich City and drawn the other with Swansea.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, most recently grabbed a great 4-3 win at West Ham United to give them their first ever top-flight points.
