Dawn Approach has similarities with sire heading into 2000 Guineas
Published:Frankel and Camelot may have sent favourite backers home happy after the last two renewals of the 2000 Guineas, but the opening Classic of the season has not always been a race to jump on the back of the market leader.
Since 1995, Celtic Swing and Xaar have been turned over when sent off odds-on, while the likes of Dubawi and St Nicholas Abbey are other favourites that have failed when well-backed.
But perhaps most significant was the 2008 running, when 11/8 favourite New Approach was caught inside the final furlong by Henrythenavigator and ended up going down by a nose.
The chance to amend the family name is something that awaits his son this year and it is somewhat ironic that Coral have also installed Dawn Approach at 11/8 to win the 2000 Guineas.
This is the first of a handful of similarities between the relations and the hope will be that the pair do not additionally share the same result at Newmarket.
New Approach made his seasonal reappearance in the Guineas off the back of an unbeaten two-year-old career, which culminated in a fifth race victory in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
Meanwhile, there was a Group One victory over 7f at the Curragh on his resume, for which he achieved an official rating of 115.
Dawn Approach has been given the same two-race build up this time and strangely he was also rated 115 after a Group One Curragh success over 7f and followed up with a Newmarket triumph in the Dewhurst.
However, there is at least one subtle difference in their profiles, which indicates that Dawn Approach holds stronger 2000 Guineas claims than his sire.
While New Approach went on to win the Epsom Derby, trainer Jim Bolger seems unlikely to send Dawn Approach down the same route, believing he may not have the stamina for 1m4f and so this is his big race of the season.
