With a total of 80 darts stars set to battle it out at the 2017 PDC World Championship, upsets are bound to happen as has happened many times before in this event.
So, starting with the first round that goes on from December 15th-22nd, Coral pick out a list of 2017 PDC Worlds underdogs who combine to form a tasty acca.
Our selected names can upset the odds as well as the tournament and, on top of that, we have chosen others who can go far in the event. Read on to find out who we’ve gone with…
First round matches
Ricky Evans v Michael Smith
As you’ll read in our day 1 preview, we have tipped Rapid Ricky Evans to overcome fellow quick thrower Smith on Thursday.
Terrific odds of 21/10 are available on Evans finally overcoming Bully Boy after six straight losses, with the former being in a good run and Smith unable to show any sort of form since he finished bottom of the Premier League this summer.
Devon Petersen v Steve Beaton
Likewise with our day 2 preview, we have backed Petersen to make it three wins from four meetings against veteran Beaton at 6/4.
The South African, knocked The Spartan, has upset The Bronzed Adonis on this very stage before in 2014 on his way to reaching the last 16, and can do so once more.
Magnus Caris v Adrian Lewis
Not many would see this match as a potential upset but, looking at past meetings between the two, it is actually Swede Caris who is 2-1 up having won their last duel with ease 6-2 in 2015.
Poker Face, who is a former BDO World Championship semi-finalist, is 8/1 to take advantage of two-time PDC world champion Lewis’ poor form and defeat him again.
Max Hopp v Vincent van der Voort
Hopp may have lost both of his previous meetings with Van der Voort, but is now beginning to come of age having reached the last 16 of the recent European Championship.
The 20-year-old German and former World Youth champion is one for the future, and so is 11/8 to replicate his feat in 2015 when he got to the second round after shocking Mervyn King. He did, however, then go onto lose to The Dutch Destroyer.
James Wilson v Kim Huybrechts
Our final first round upset pick sees Wilson go up against 13th seed Huybrechts, with the winner to face one of above duo Hopp or Van der Voort.
Two-time BDO major champion Jammie Dodger upset The Hurricane at the recent European Championship, so why not back him to do so again at a tempting 13/8 price.
First round accumulator
If you fancy all of our above picks to win, just £1 could see you win a whopping £434.85 at the time of writing, so why not take the small punt? This 2017 PDC Worlds underdogs acca is really appealing.
Other tournament picks
As for other tournament picks, recent World Youth champion Corey Cadby is certainly one to watch, after the young Australian also defeated all-time great Phil Taylor 6-2 at the Perth Masters this August.
His price of 1/12 to defeat preliminary round opponent Qiang Sun is not the most enticing, but it does show that he is a future star.
Cadby would take on Joe Cullen if he comes through that battle, and it would be difficult to bet against him not getting past the Yorkshireman. From there, if our above prediction comes off, he has a very winnable clash against Caris and from there who knows?
Odds of 40/1 say that he’ll win quarter 2, which certainly says a lot as he is above the likes of Van der Voort, Hopp, Robbie Green and Kevin Painter in the betting.
Mensur Suljovic is another who is tipped to go far after his fantastic year, which has seen him rapidly rise to the world’s top eight.
He is 1/5 to see off first opponent Ron Meulenkamp, while he is second-favourite at 11/1 to win the first quarter behind Michael van Gerwen, who has not done as well as he has wanted at World Championships.
Finally, we also think that Alan Norris has what it takes to go on a good run this year. Although the 2014 BDO Worlds runner-up is in the same quarter as Cadby, backing them both (Chuck at 18/1) would still leave you in profit if one makes it through to the semis.
