Danny Ings wants first-team football – so where could he go?

Danny Ings

Liverpool striker is poised for Anfield exit

He’s given it three years, but the Gods of football have persuaded Danny Ings that he’s just not meant to make it at Anfield.

The striker has been so unfortunate with serious knee injuries, and it says everything about his desire and work ethic that he has forced his way back to fitness.

He even made 14 appearances last season in all competitions. But he remains behind Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

So the likeable Englishman has faced the music and is seeking another club. He could be a bargain at around £10m, but who might be interested? The Coral News Team run through the potential contenders…

Burnley

Burnley is where Ings really came to the fore. A superb 21 goals in the 2013-14 Championship promotion campaign was followed with double figures in the Premier League a season later.

The Clarets are in the market for a striker, if reports of their pursuit of West Bromwich Albion’s Jay Rodriguez are to be believed.

But if the Baggies’ hold firm, then budget-conscious Burnley could turn to their former hero.

Bournemouth

Ings began his career at Bournemouth, when the Cherries are in League One.

But the Cherries have also enjoyed a rise to the top table. Could a reunion be on the cards?

This one could be a touch unlikely. Bournemouth already have Callum Wilson on their books as their main goal-getter. Joshua King and Jermaine Defoe are at Dean Court too.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham made a move for Ings a few years ago, back when Harry Kane still had doubters about his potential to be more than a ‘one-season wonder’.

But Kane is now firmly Spurs’ main man and is unquestionably a world class striker. No forward could oust him from the squad now.

Spurs would still like Ings for squad depth, but ultimately that means he would still be reduced to a bit-part role, he’d just be swapping Liverpool for London and red for white.

Newcastle United

Ings to Newcastle? This is one which could be on the cards. Magpies boss Rafa Benitez continues to wait for additional funds at St James’ Park.

Which means a move for an affordable Ings makes sense. The Toon Army are also poised to offload Aleksander Mitrovic which could help move things along.

West Ham United

Of course West Ham are linked. They’re always linked. But this time, it looks like the Hammers are getting serious.

Manuel Pellegrini is in the hotseat, and the highly sought-after Issa Diop has arrived from Toulouse and Lukasz Fabianski is in from Swansea City. There’s likely to be more of that calibre coming too.

So they could certainly take a punt on Ings. But the stumbling block is that Javier Hernandez is already on the books in East London.

There are reports that the Mexican is – or at least was – unhappy under David Moyes, so it remains to be seen if he stays. If Hernandez goes, expect the Hammers to focus on Ings.
