Plenty of action from Roland Garros
The French Open action continues today, with second round ties in the Men’s and Women’s singles.
That includes some cracking match-ups, including an all-French clash between Gael Monfils and Martin Klizan.
And the Coral News Team are serving up five top tips on the day’s games…
World number two Wozniacki won her first ever Grand Slam earlier this year, seeing off Simona Halep in a hard-fought Australian Open final. But today’s test, against Spain’s Garcia Perez should be a walk in the park by comparison.
This is the first time the Spaniard has made it past the opening qualifying round at a Grand Slam. And she’s likely to prove easy pickings for Wozniacki, who breezed to the French Open quarter-finals in 2017.
The Belgian ace reached the third round at Roland Garros in 2017, winning the opening set en route to comfortable victories over Paul-Henri Mathieu and Sergiy Stakhovsky.
He’s unlikely to slip up against Corentin Moutet, who’s currently ranked below 140 in the WTA.
The Croatian’s star is continuing to rise, having reached the fourth round in the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon since 2017 began. Having defeated the likes of Madison Keys here last year, she’ll be confident of beating Wang.
The Chinese player has never made it past the second round of any major tournament, and has seen her WTA ranking drop 34 places already this year, to 78th.
The Frenchman has a terrific record on the clay, with three quarter-final appearances and one semi at Roland Garros already on his CV. And he should prove too strong for Slovakian Martin Klizan.
Monfils beat the likes of Richard Gasquet en route to the fourth round last year, and has started well this year with a 3-1 first round defeat of Elliot Benchetrit. In the process, he won eight games more than his opponent.
The pair’s last French Open meeting was a four-set cracker, with Nishikori coming from behind to win 3-1 in sets. And with the man from Matsue reaching the last eight in Paris in 2017, he should edge this clash.
Paire exited the Australian Open with a 3-1 loss to Gael Garcia Lopez earlier this year. And while he’s usually good to pick up a set, this kind of test is likely to prove too tough for him.
