There’s a smattering of top tennis and fine football on this Wednesday, including French Open action and an international test for the coming World Cup hosts.
Once again, the Coral News Team have served up five top tips on the action, starting with two of the morning’s ties at Roland Garros…
The Frenchman has enjoyed some of his best career performances in the French Open. Monfils has reached the quarter-finals three times and semi-finals once. After a commanding first round defeat of Elliot Benchetrit, he faces Martin Klizan.
The Slovakian has never made it beyond this stage at Roland Garros. And he failed to pass the second round of any Grand Slam in 2017.
Having seen off the likes of Richard Gasquet on the clay last year, Monfils looks likely to do the business again.
World number 21 Nishikori is also in action at Roland Garros, facing Frenchman Benoit Paire. The Japanese ace has triumphed in both of the pair’s previous clay-court meetings, and reached the French Open quarter-finals last year.
Paire has had a disappointing 2018 thus far, including a first round defeat to world number 71 Guillermo Garcia Lopez in the Australian Open. This should be easy pickings for Nishikori.
As one of the lowest-ranked teams in this summer’s World Cup, it’s fair to say Russia may not be there if they weren’t the hosts. And they could have a rude awakening when they visit an in-form Austria.
Das Team have won their last five games, including a 2-1 defeat of Uruguay and a 3-2 win over Serbia in WC Qualifying. As for Russia, they’ve winless in five – losing three of those.
In Brazil’s Serie A, Vasco da Gama could jump into the top-half with victory over basement-dwelling Parana. Vasco have picked up 10 points from their last five league games at home, including a 4-1 demolition of America Mineiro.
The forecast looks gloomy for visitors Parana. They’ve failed to win any of their first seven matches, and lost 1-0 at home to Vasco in the last meeting.
Also in Brazil’s top-flight, heavyweights Internacional are looking to record a third win in succession as they visit lowly Vitoria.
Having recorded impressive results against Chapecoense (3-0) and Corinthians (2-1) in their last two games, Vitoria should be easy pickings for Colorado. The home side have won just two of their previous 12 home league fixtures.
