Coral Welsh Grand National preview: Will Secret Reprieve make it back-to-back Welsh wins?

Coral Welsh Grand National

We look ahead to the Chepstow showpiece

The Coral Welsh Grand National is always one of the highlights of the racing calendar for us. And this year looks set to be no different, with a thrilling renewal potentially on the cards at Chepstow.

Ahead of the action on Sunday afternoon, we’ve cast our eye over some of the most popular selections…

Secret Reprieve

After Christian Williams’ Potters Corner became Wales’ first winner of this race since Norther in 1965 last year, Evan Williams will be hoping Secret Reprieve can seal a second Welsh wins in a row.

Williams himself has waited a long time for a Coral Welsh Grand National winner. He’ll hope Secret Reprieve can build on the promise shown when winning the trial earlier this month, though the marathon course could test his stamina.

Springfield Fox

Springfield Fox looks to have solid staying potential and he shouldn’t have any issues with the ground in testing conditions. He won two novice handicaps from three starts over fences last season, including the M & G Plant Hire Novices’ Handicap Chase at Chepstow.

He had a tough time in the National Hunt Chase in March, but he’ll have benefited from a comeback run earlier this month.

Truckers Lodge

After finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind Potters Corner last year, can Truckers Lodge go one better this time around? He may be 16lb higher in the weights, largely due to winning the Midlands National at Uttoxeter in March, but he’ll enjoy the conditions.

Yala Enki

Like Truckers Lodge, Yala Enki will be looking to build on recent performances here. He finished third in the Coral Welsh Grand National in 2018 and 2019 – will this be his year to triumph?

He comes into this on the back of a second-placed finish at Cheltenham in November, though he fell in his last outing at Aintree.

The lightly-raced Dominateur could be a dark horse here. Winners of this race tend to have Chepstow form and Oliver Sherwood’s seven-year-old certainly likes it here.

He won a novices limited handicap chase in this meet last year and could be ready to step up now.
