2017 Australian Open outright tips
With the 2017 Australian Open fast approaching, Coral tennis writers have picked out five main contenders to take home the title from Melbourne.
The likes of legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are taking part this year again, but as well as slipping down the rankings they are also seemingly out of contention to add to their astonishing amount of Grand Slam trophies.
However, read on to see who we have chosen among our 2017 Australian Open outright tips…
Sir Andy Murray
British superstar Murray has had accolades thrown at him ever since finishing the season as ATP world number one for the first time last year, including a knighthood.
For the first-time ever too, he starts a Grand Slam campaign as top seed and is also joint-favourite for the Australian Open title at 6/4.
Being a five-time runner-up here, the Scotsman will be determined to finally win Down Under and in turn claim a fourth Grand Slam crown.
Novak Djokovic
Along with Murray, Djokovic is priced at 6/4, and for good reason having won an Open Era record of six titles here – at least double of any other Grand Slam he’s claimed.
He may have slipped towards the end of 2016, but looks back in top form after recently edging Murray out in the Qatar Open final.
If he can beat veteran Fernando Verdasco in the first round, his path to yet another final shouldn’t be too tricky.
Milos Raonic
Currently the best of the rest in tennis is surely Canada’s Raonic, as his third seeding proves.
The Montenegrin-born big server reached semis here and the final at Wimbledon last year, and aged 26 he is approaching his peak.
Surely a Grand Slam title is with in touching distance for Raonic, and he is 18/1 to win this year’s Aussie Open.
Stan Wawrinka
Not far behind Raonic in the rankings is Wawrinka, who once again astonished the tennis world by claiming a third Grand Slam at last year’s US Open.
At the age of 31, you’d think he’d start to slow down, but who knows what to expect with Wawrinka, who is 14/1 to win another Australian Open crown – three years after doing so.
Kei Nishikori
Finally, we move onto Japanese star Nishikori who, like Raonic, should no doubt claim at least a Grand Slam title or two before the end of his career.
The 27-year-old 2014 US Open runner-up had an inconsistent 2016, but still showed glimpses of what he’s made of. Nishikori is 33/1 to be victorious this time around.
