Coral Champions Club horse Battle Of Ideas to make debut at Warwick

If you’re a member of the Coral Champions Club, then you’ll be excited to learn our horse, Battle Of Ideas, is to make his racecourse debut in a 2m bumper at Warwick this Saturday (16:05).

It’s a first for the Club. We’ve never bought an unraced horse before, but Battle Of Ideas caught the eye of top trainer Colin Tizzard and son Joe at the sales with his athleticism, pedigree and swagger.

Such is the confidence in Battle Of Ideas that the Tizzard team were prepared to enter him in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.

“He’s done everything nicely at home”

Although eliminated from that race, Joe Tizzard feels it may have been a blessing in disguise. “He’s done everything nicely at home and he’s probably better now having had a couple of extra weeks than he was for Cheltenham,” he said of Battle Of Ideas.

“He did a really nice piece of work on Tuesday morning and we’re really excited about him running. He’s a baby that’s improving all the time.

“We were more than happy to run him a fortnight ago but he’s learning his job all the time and is growing up all the time. He’s ready for a run now though.”

Although he’s a four-year-old, Battle Of Ideas is lacking experience and racing trainers are faced with decisions about how to approach young horses.

“Our horses always improve for their first runs”

Some handlers give newcomers plenty of preparatory work at home, while others let them come on for racecourse experience.

Team Tizzard aim to improve their horses for that initial outing, and if talented enough to win first time out then they ensure their charges are fit enough to capitalise.

“Our horses always improve for their first runs,” Joe Tizzard continued. “We don’t tend to take them off for racecourse gallops or anything like that, we let them learn on the racecourse.

“Whatever happens they’ll be masses of improvement for his first run, but there’s no reason he still can’t go and run well.”

“We’re looking forward to running him”

It’s been a hugely successful season so far for the Tizzard stable, courtesy of Cue Card (Betfair Chase), Thistlecrack (King George VI Chase), Native River (Coral Welsh Grand National), Finian’s Oscar (Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle) and others.

In light of this, the enthusiasm and passion with which Joe speaks about Battle Of Ideas is notable.

“He’s a really nice little horse and we’re looking forward to running him,” Tizzard junior added. “This season’s going brilliantly and we couldn’t be happier.

“We’ve got a lot of beautiful horses and it’s the best group of horses we’ve ever had at the moment. It’s just really exciting and they’re running really well.”
