Clemmie favourite for 1000 Guineas after Cheveley Park romp

Star juvenile has shone this term
The Aidan O’Brien trained Clemmie has been installed as the 4/1 favourite for the 2018 1000 Guineas.
It comes after another excellent display, this time in last Saturday’s Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. O’Brien’s charge was prominent throughout and kept with the leaders right up until the final furlong pole.
Then, jockey Ryan Moore said go. Clemmie showed what is fast becoming her trademark turn of foot to assert a lead inside the last half-furlong. She stayed on well to secure a comfortable distance victory.
In victory over Different League, the two-year-old also showed her credentials when it comes to a possible step up in trip over a mile.
A fine season
Clemmie’s Newmarket success made it a hat-trick for the filly at Group level this season. Her progression has been impressive, with each victory coming in different conditions.
After a narrow maiden defeat at the Curragh, she finished seventh of 20 in the Group 3 Albany Stakes in June. Since then, however, the daughter of Galileo has not looked back.
A first black-type success came at her native Curragh in July. As the 6/4 favourite she stayed on inside the final furlong to secure a first group win.
That was followed by a confident victory from Nyaleti in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. As has become her trademark, the two-year-old chased the leaders before launching an assault to lead inside the final furlong.
1000 Guineas pedigree
After impressing over 6f, the step-up to a mile looks natural for Clemmie. She appears to have plenty more to give and it’s no surprise that she’s been installed as favourite for the 1000 Guineas.
As a full-sister to dual-Guineas winner Churchill, the filly certainly has the family tree to suggest leading claims. Galileo has sired 13 Guineas champions, including Winter and Minding over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket.
Connections also have an excellent record in the Classic. O’Brien has trained the last two winners of the 1000 Guineas and four in total. Ryan Moore, Clemmie’s regular jockey, has also won the last two renewals in partnership with O’Brien. A tried and tested double act looks easy to back at 4/1.
Is the Breeders’ Cup an option?
Aidan O’Brien has hinted that his latest star could head to America and compete in the Breeders’ Cup. If she does, she’ll be stepped up in trip to 1m in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
There’s definitely more to come from the two-year-old. And the Coral News Team think she has what it takes to comfortably manage the step up, should O’Brien opt for a trip to Del Mar.
