Odds and preview ahead of tonight’s matches

Almost 12 months after it started, the Championship season reaches its conclusion this evening.

And for many teams, everything comes down to tonight. Leeds have already secured the title, ending their 16-year wait to return to the top flight.

But three teams are still in with a chance of joining them in gaining automatic promotion. Meanwhile, the play-off spots are yet to be decided, while seven teams could still mathematically be relegated.

Every match this evening kicks off at 19:30 and we’ve taken a look at everything that could happen on the final day.

The promotion battle

After clinching the title, Leeds fans can relax and watch the drama unfold as they discover who will join them in the Premier League next season.

West Brom are in pole position as it stands despite last week’s defeat at Huddersfield. The Baggies sit in second on 82 points and they’re currently 1/8 with Coral to go up.

Slaven Bilic’s side are guaranteed promotion if they beat Queens Park Rangers tonight. They’re priced at 2/7 to win, while Charlie Austin is 14/5 to open the scoring against his former club.

Brentford missed the chance to leapfrog West Brom as they lost to Stoke on Saturday and they’ll need their promotion rivals to drop points in order to avoid a play-off campaign.

The Bees, who are on 81 points, host relegation-threatened Barnsley and they’re 2/5 to win, which would send the Yorkshire club down.

Meanwhile, Fulham sit in third on 80 points and they could sneak second place if the two above them mess up.

Scott Parker’s men visit a Wigan side that beat Hull 8-0 in their last home game and an away win tonight is priced at 7/5. Wigan need the points themselves as they face the drop and they’re going at 7/4, while over 7.5 goals is 50/1 for those that fancy another goalfest.

The play-off chase

Following tonight’s games, two of West Brom, Brentford and Fulham will have to settle for a place in the play-offs.

The other two spots will be filled by two of Nottingham Forest, Cardiff and Swansea. Forest are currently sitting pretty in fifth and look likely to remain in the top six.

The Midlands side are on 70 points, three points clear of seventh-placed Swansea, and only a big swing in goal difference will see them miss out.

Forest are 6/5 to beat Stoke this evening and a draw will guarantee them a spot in the play-offs, which can be backed at 9/4.

Meanwhile, Cardiff are also on 70 points, meaning a draw at rock-bottom Hull will be enough. They’re 4/9 for a win, which would see the Tigers drop into the third tier for the first time in 15 years.

Swansea need to win at Reading and hope fierce rivals Cardiff lose if they want to steal a spot in the top six. The Swans have won three of their last five games and they’re odds-on favourites at 19/20 to pick up another three points tonight.

Relegation battle

Hull need a miracle to stay up. They’re three points behind 21st-placed Charlton but their goal difference is 16 worse off, meaning only a set of freak results will see them survive.

Things also look bleak for Barnsley, who are two points from safety and face a trip to high-flying Brentford. They’re priced at 6/1 to end Thomas Frank’s side’s hopes of automatic promotion.

The real battle for survival is between Luton and Charlton, who are level on 48 points. The Hatters are unbeaten in four games and they host Blackburn, who they’re odds-on at 17/20 to beat.

Meanwhile, Charlton visit Leeds, who may want to finish the season in style or may already be on the beach. The south London side are 17/4 to cause an upset.

Should Luton and Charlton both secure wins, Birmingham and Middlesbrough, both on 50 points, are also in danger.

Birmingham host Derby tonight, while Boro visit Sheffield Wednesday. Both sides are guaranteed safety if they win.

Wigan remain desperate for points, with the prospect of a 12-point deduction hanging over them after they went into administration. They’re currently 10 points clear of safety and a win over promotion-chasing Fulham is essential for survival.

The Latics are going at 7/4 to secure their fifth successive win at home, while top scorer Kieffer Moore is 6/4 to get on the scorersheet.
