Britain’s bookmakers to donate Britannia Stakes profits to charity

Win and each-way profits from Royal Ascot race to be donated
Britain’s bookmakers are joining forces on Thursday to raise money for charity by donating all profits made on The Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot to a range of charities.
This Royal Ascot betting industry-wide charity initiative follows the hugely successful charity effort on the Virtual Grand National in April, where British bookmakers raised almost £3 million for the NHS Charities Together.
From the Britannia Stakes, we’re helping more charities, including Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie, The Care Workers Charity and the Berkshire Community Foundation Coronavirus Fund.
Betting and Gaming Council members will donate all profits made from win and each-way bets after levy and duties are deducted. The Britannia Stakes takes place at 16:10 on Thursday 18th June, which is Royal Ascot Gold Cup day.
Coral’s Simon Clare said: “The decision to stage Royal Ascot behind closed doors, following the resumption of horse racing, has provided a huge lifeline to betting operators and everyone who works in – and is connected to – horse racing, so it is entirely fitting that the betting industry has come together to raise money for charity on one of the biggest betting races of the week.”
“We are still having sleepless nights about last year’s Britannia Stakes as a furlong from the finish it looked like Frankie Dettori was going to cost the betting industry over £100 million by landing a five-timer on Turgenev. Thankfully for us, Harry Bentley and Biometric swooped late and saved the bookies’ bacon, although we still faced a multi-million-pound pay-out on Frankie’s four-timer.”
“This year we already know that we won’t make any money on The Britannia Stakes but we will be delighted to pay out all the profits to these really worthy charities,” Clare added.
Coral ambassador Jim Crowley said: “It is fantastic that Britain’s bookies have come together to raise money at Royal Ascot and on one of the biggest and most competitive races of the week.
“I ride Khaloosy who should have a decent chance, but if I don’t win, I hope we get a shock result so that as much money as possible can be donated to the charities,” Crowley added.
