Brendan Powell: I’m really looking forward to getting on him again

In his exclusive blog for Coral, jockey Brendan Powell previews his four rides at Taunton on Saturday.

1.00 Taunton – Super Sabre Sam

He made a nice start in a bumper at Sandown last time when he wasn’t beaten all that far in what could turn out to be quite a nice little race. He’s not really made for bumpers, he’s quite a big rangy horse, so I think going hurdling over a bit further should see him in a better light here.

Taunton is a nice place to start a horse jumping, and I think the 2m 3f will be ideal for him at this stage, so hopefully he can make a nice start over hurdles and give us something to build on.

1.35 Taunton – Furkash

Furkash is a very consistent horse, and he’s on what appears to be a very attractive mark now. He ran well over hurdles at Huntingdon two starts ago, then he was bang there two out at Taunton last time, but the front two just quickened away from him and he couldn’t quite go with them.

He can throw in the odd sticky jump, but hopefully he’ll get into a good rhythm round here, and if he does, then I think he goes there with a really solid chance.

2.10 Taunton – Obsessedwithyou

I’ve never ridden her before, but I’ve been looking through her form, and she put up some decent performances last season. She doesn’t appear to have quite reached that level yet this season, but it is still early days for her, so hopefully she’ll have more to come.

She does have plenty to find at the weights with the principles, but I think the plan is to try and nick some black type with her, and when you look at the race, you’d think she’d have a reasonable chance of that. Queens Gamble looks the one we’ll all have to beat, and Casa No Mento looks her main rival, but after that there isn’t a lot between the rest of us, so hopefully we can run a nice race and pick up that valuable bit of black type.

3.20 Taunton – Pedley Wood

He made a lovely start over fences last time when winning at Hereford, and going chasing really seemed to improve him. He did make the odd small error on the way round, so there is a bit of room for improvement in his jumping, but hopefully he’ll have learnt plenty from that, and I think 3m 2f round Taunton will be ideal for him.

He’s only gone up 4lb for that win last time, and I think he’s entitled to improve for the run, so I’m really looking forward to getting on him again, and I’d say he’ll take all the beating.
