Newcastle finally capture Townsend
Newcastle United have finally completed the signing of England international wideman Andros Townsend from Tottenham for an undisclosed fee, with the 24-year-old agreeing a five-and-a-half-year contract with Steve McClaren’s Magpies.
The Toon have been heavily linked with the Spurs misfit for some time and are believed to have been initially put off by the London club’s previous evaluation, but Townsend now arrives at St James’ Park hoping to make an immediate impact in their fight to overturn Premier League fortunes.
With Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino having been keen to free up space in his squad, and Newcastle needing an attacking boost, such a switch will benefit both clubs as well as Townsend, who is now 7/2 with Coral to secure a spot in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad this summer.
Townsend thrilled at finally agreeing move
After months of speculation surrounding his future, Townsend declared his delight at finally agreeing a Toon switch, stating: “I’m delighted to be here. Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition.
“As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go so I can’t wait to get started.”
Euro hopes for new Magpies man
Townsend was an integral part of England’s senior set-up last season but, after he was banished from Tottenham’s first-team for an altercation with the fitness coach, the winger had since played just 64 minutes of Premier League action for Spurs and dropped from Hodgson’s thinking.
Although, his latest career move will be a huge boost to his international prospects with only months remaining before the Three Lions Euro 2016 squad is announced ahead of a hopeful trip to France. Townsend will be desperate to cement a seat on the plane to the coveted tournament, but will have to rediscover his form of old in order to catch the eye once again.
At just 24 years of age, the talented winger may have finally found the right club at which to develop properly and settle down, having endured no less than nine different loan spells away from Spurs during his indifferent time in London.
Newcastle will hope Townsend can recapture the dazzling form which saw the wideman become a key cog in Hodgson’s England machine last term, helping them early on Euro 2016 qualifying, with McClaren’s Toon 6/5 to face the drop this current campaign.
