Joe Tizzard: “Theatre Guide is in great form for big race target”

The latest insight from the Tizzard stables

We’ve had some nice winners over the last few weekends but it’s a quieter one for us this weekend.

The constant soft and heavy ground can just take its toll after a while, and so we want to let the ground come right for quite a few horses and ensure we have some ammo for the spring.

Saturday’s runners

14.05 Newbury – Theatre Guide

Theatre Guide has been saved for this race. He ran really well in this race last year and would have won but for making a mistake at the last. He’s in great form.

Kim rides him every day and she says he’s absolutely bouncing. He doesn’t get any younger but that doesn’t seem to stop him putting in big performances. We are looking forward to running him.

15.50 Newbury – Faustinovick

We are fact-finding with him a little bit. He looked like the winner everywhere at Sandown last time but then stopped coming to the last for whatever reason. Nothing has come to light since. At that time a couple of ours weren’t running that well, so that might have been it.

We think he’s well handicapped, and we are going back to Newbury where he has run well before.

So we are just looking for a better run, as he hasn’t been finishing his races recently.

Joe Tizzard

Former Jump jockey Joe Tizzard enjoyed a stellar career in the saddle, with his record 91 wins to claim the 1998-99 champion conditional title gaining him prominence. Tizzard’s first Cheltenham Festival successes came during that period, including an Arkle win onboard the Paul Nicholls trained Flagship Uberalles. However, it was his Grade 1 victories in partnership with Cue Card, trained by dad Colin, which really catapulted Joe into the big time. Now assistant trainer to his father the Tizzards’ Dorset yard is home to some of the most exciting horses in training, including Cue Card, Thistlecrack and Native River. You can read Joe’s thoughts and get exclusive insight at news.coral.co.uk throughout the 2019-20 season.
