Big Match Breakdown: Chelsea v Arsenal

Chelsea odds

The Blues are clear favourites at Stamford Bridge

There’s a huge London derby at Stamford Bridge this weekend as Chelsea take on Arsenal.

Arsenal can answer some of their recent critics with a win. But they’ll be up against it here. Chelsea have won all four of their games since losing to Burnley on the opening day of the season.

Ahead of the game, the Coral News Team have all of the information you need…

Head to Head

The two league games between these clubs last season resulted in home wins. Arsenal’s won 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Chelsea won 3-1 in front of their fans.

The game at the Emirates was a key turning point in Chelsea’s title success. It led to Antonio Conte switching to the 3-5-2 system that served his team so well.

They also met in the FA Cup final at the end of the season. Arsenal produced a superb display to win 2-1.

Last season was the exception to the recent history between the two sides. Chelsea had been totally dominant in the years prior.

Arsenal went nine league games without beating Chelsea before last season’s victory at home. To make matters worse, they went almost 10 hours without even scoring against their London rivals – a run stretching from January 2013 to September 2016.

Likely XIs

Eden Hazard is set to make his first start of the season for the home side. Gary Cahill should also come back into defence after serving his suspension.

Conte’s biggest decision could be whether to play Victor Moses at right wing-back or give Davide Zappacosta his first Premier League start.

For Arsenal, a trio of Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez is their strongest attacking trio on paper. However, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Arsene Wenger found a place for Danny Welbeck.

The Arsenal boss will remember how Welbeck’s speed and movement stretched the Chelsea defence in the FA Cup final. The England international also scored twice against Bournemouth last weekend.

Key Battles

Hazard may not be fully match fit but he’s still got the quality to decide this game. Arsenal’s midfield need to be switched on to ensure their defenders aren’t left isolated against the Belgium international.

Aaron Ramsey has a big role to play here. His attacking runs have often left Granit Xhaka isolated  in midfield. He’ll need to be more disciplined against a side that counter attacks as well as Chelsea.

N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko offer great defensive protection in midfield. Arsenal’s best hope could be to go around them with Sead Kolasinac’s power on the left. Victor Moses isn’t a natural defender and could struggle to cope.

Match Odds

Arsenal have lost their last five league matches against their fellow top six clubs. They’ve also failed to win any of their last 13 away games against those same sides.

Chelsea are huge favourites at 4/5. Arsenal are 13/4 at Coral and the draw is 14/5.

With that in mind, there could be value in Chelsea to Win to Nil at 5/2.

Eden Hazard has scored in three of Arsenal’s last four visits to the Bridge. He danced around three Gunners’ defenders to score the Premier League Goal of the Month in this fixture last term. He’s 17/10 to score Anytime.
