BetVictor Gold Cup tips: In-form Frodon and Nicholls to fire at The Open
Published:BetVictor Gold Cup tips: Frodon odds appeal
Frodon odds show he is bang in-form and so is his handler Paul Nicholls. When in comes to BetVictor Gold Cup tips, then, this combination is well worth backing to upset the much-fancied More Of That in The Open meeting at Cheltenham’s day two feature (14:25).
One of four representatives expected to go for the Ditcheat champion trainer, Fordon arrives at Prestbury Park having won each of his three previous starts this season.
The promising four-year-old gelding, boasting a career record of four wins and a place from seven races, was last seen in action just a week ago when claiming victory over today’s two-and-a-half miles in the Wincanton Rising Stars Novices’ Chase.
Frodon’s other victories this term can at Newton Abbot and Fontwell, and that form sets him apart from Nicholls stablemates Art Mauresque, Bouvreuil and As De Mee.
Stable and horse both in splendid form
That Wincanton win came in facile fashion, as Frodon cantered home alone after race rival Master Dee was withdrawn, favourite Shantou Village fell and Virgilio was sympathetically pulled up by jockey Harry Skelton after making a mistake.
Connections obviously believe the selection kept enough in reserve that day to go again here. Nicholls has won two of the last four renewals, with Al Ferof in 2012 and Caid Du Berlais in 2014.
Jockey Harry Cobden continues to partner Frodon, so all looks in place for him make it four on the bounce here.
Thomas Crapper each-way a long-range alternative
Lovers of an outsider may find interest in Thomas Crapper each-way hard to pass up, as the highly-experienced nine-year-old looks to get back to the kind of form that saw him win twice before around Prestbury Park over hurdles, albeit three years ago.
Robin Dickin’s ace was also twice a runner-up at the Cheltenham Festival, behind Don Poli in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle and Irish Cavalier in the Novices’ Handicap Chase.
Thomas Crapper absolutely loves this venue and has a winning performance to his credit this year.
Taking a handicap chase at Newbury back in April, he’s fitted with a tongue-strap for the first time, which connections are hoping will bring about marked-improvement.
If it does, Thomas Crapper each-way looks to be very well-handicapped indeed, especially at what’s expected to be large odds.
