Betting suggests next general election will still be in 2020
Published:With Theresa May set to move into Number 10 tomorrow to begin her role as the new Prime Minister, leading bookmaker Coral is betting on when the next general election will take place in the United Kingdom in which they make 2020 or later the even money favourite. The firm go 7-4 that there is a general election later this year, while it is 7-2 for one to take place in 2017.
Coral make the Conservative Party the odds-on favourites at 4-11 to win the most seats at the next general election, while they are 11-10 to gain a majority, just like they did in 2015.
Elsewhere in Coral’s politics betting, Andrea Eagle has been cut into 5-2 (from 11-4) to be the next Labour leader after attracting support in the market, the firm is offering 4-1 that there will be a second EU referendum before the end of 2020 and is odds-on at 8-11 that there is a Scottish independence referendum by the end of 2020.
“Despite a change in Prime Minister, the betting suggests the next general election will still take place in 2020 and not later this year,” said Coral’s John Hill.
“The Conservative Party remain odds-on to win the most seats at the next general election, while they are favourites to gain an overall majority just like they did in 2015,” added Hill.
“Although Jeremy Corbyn remains the Labour leader despite a no-confidence vote, he is odds-on not to be in charge of the party at the next general election where Andrea Eagle is attracting all the money in the betting to replace him,” concluded Hill.
