Bet of the day: Wednesday’s racing
Published:Our pick of the card at Ascot
UK horse racing meetings are scheduled at Ascot, Pontefract, Wolverhampton, Brighton and Yarmouth on Wednesday, and you can pick the winners here at Coral. Get involved throughout the day with us.
For our best bet of the afternoon we focus on the six-race card at Ascot, which gets underway at 2.00pm. We have given our pick in the opener, as well as a selection in every race of the meeting, which you will find at the foot of this page.
Appleby to get his point across
We show little more than a casual interest until the 3.45pm group three Merriebelle Stable Pavilion Stakes, where 12 runners go to post. Of the dozen, we reckon Blue Point will take all the beating.
Charlie Appleby entrusts the ride to William Buick, and that looks a great partnership for punters to follow. The three-year-old colt arrives at track with an impressive CV reading three wins, two seconds and a third from six starts. He enjoyed back-to-back success in his first two, at Nottingham and Doncaster last summer, and that was enhanced when winning around York in the grade two Gimcrack Stakes in August, off an SP 11/8.
Sprint trip should suit
This will be Blue Point’s first outing since October, when placing third in the group one Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, ending behind Churchill and Lancaster Bomber. He never got near the front two that day, but proved he could mix it in that sort of company, and following time away, we’re excited to see what kind of shape the ace returns in.
The six-furlong sprint distance will play exactly to his strengths, and we have him picked to bank a return to the winner’s enclosure. Goes for a hot yard at the minute, and the 13/8 currently being offered up by Coral looks well worth a play. If we see Blue Point in the kind of shape that’s expected, he will give us a big run for our stake money.
