Morrison’s form deserves respect
Racing at Southwell gets started at 2.10pm with a one-mile handicap, and all the early talk seems to be about Bo Selecta, which we will be following. Our best of the day lines up in the next on the card however, with Finale taken to win the 2.40pm maiden stakes, disputed over the one-mile distance.
Hughie Morrison sends his promising three-year-old filly out here, and she caught the eye when finishing runner-up behind Vantage Point around here late last month. Despite going off at double-figure odds, she was seen staying on at the end, and although never troubling the winner, many punters took note of the effort.
That bold showing was over course and distance and against, what appears to be, a weaker field on Tuesday, she is taken to improve a place and bank the prize money. Followers of the stats will be intrigued to know that Morrison has a 24 per cent strike rate at Southwell. That’s worth keeping on side.
Pursuit of a winner
In the penultimate contest, a six-furlongs sprint handicap due off at 4.10pm, we have 13-runners to choose from, but the one for me is Bounty Pursuit, who claimed his first win last time out around Wolverhampton.
His early record now reads three starts – one win, a second and a third. That win came little over a week ago, and the fact connections have him out again so quickly must go down as a positive. There looks plenty more to come from Bounty Pursuit, and with jockey Alistair Rawlinson back in the saddle, we have a pop.
