Bet of the day: Standout at Southwell

Bring On A Spinner to continue his progress

A competitive six-race card goes on the fibresand of Southwell today, with the action getting underway at 12.55pm with a punchy maiden.

Our bet of the day at the Nottinghamshire track lines up in the 2.00pm handicap, with a talented 12-runner field battling it out over the six-furlong sprint distance. Of the main protagonists, Bring On A Spinner leaps off the page at me as the one to have.

Southwell seems to suit

Stuart Williams’ four-year-old gelding has been a bit of a mixed bag of fortunes so far, but the promise is certainly there for all to see. He certainly seems to enjoy himself around Southwell too, with each of three previous career wins coming at this track, with the most recent of those, only last month, also over today’s trip.

Send On A Spinner has been seen once since, failing to make an impression behind Razin’ Hell over five-furlongs, but he just didn’t seem right that day, in better company than he faces here, and I’m happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. The win on his penultimate start was achieved with two-furlongs to spare and the fact he was seen running on at the end fills backers with confidence.

Aaron Jones returns to the saddle, having done the steering on each of the three winning occasions, and the two seem to work well together. It’s that familiarity that’ll allow him to go and make the most of an open-race at what should be a decent price.

Get more for your money

Coral punters looking to try something at a bit more of a punter-friendly price should try their luck with Pull The Pin in the second race on the schedule, another six-furlong handicap off at 1.30pm.

Rob Hornby’s ride is as experienced as they come, and has more than proven his worth in this sphere, going as a three-time course and distance winner. The eight-year-old hasn’t stuck his head in front for a while now, but he appears to have been given every chance at the weights to relive past glories.

A recent trade in trainers appeared to do our selection the world of good and we caught a glimpse of him just last week, blowing the cobwebs off around Southwell after almost a year out. He will come on for that effort and, at what is expected to be a meaty price, we give him an each-way chance.
