Coral’s bet of the day

  • Roxyfet a winner on three of his last four starts
  • He’s regularly raced at northern courses by trainer Hammond
  • Jockey O’Toole has a 7lb claim giving gelding a real shout at the weights

Roxyfet ready to rock

Micky Hammond horse Roxyfet looks to hold leading claims of capturing the 1m 7f handicap chase (14:35) at Wetherby today now he goes back over fences.

Although beaten seven lengths by Away For Slates last time out in a hurdle race at Sedgefield when blundering at the last, Roxyfet has instead shown a clear preference for chasing.

Not only winning all three of his previous starts, the six-year-old also likes the soft ground he gets today at this Yorkshire venue.

Trip sure to suit

With Hammond keeping this French gelding almost exclusively racing at courses in the north of England, a common denominator in Roxyfet’s five career victories and as many placings is that they have come over distances of around 2m.

His last run at Sedgefield perhaps came too soon after winning six days earlier around Catterick, which was also a quick reappearance some 72 hours after landing a hurdle race between chasing successes.

Now given a month off to recover from four outings in 19 days, Roxyfet should be raring to go against a small field in this handicap facing opposition that lacks his progressive profile.

O’Toole no fool on board

Once again partnered by Finian O’Toole, who takes 7lb off the back of Roxyfet, meaning he carries 11st 7lb today, which is 5lb less than when last successful over the bigger obstacles, this gives Hammond’s horse every chance at the weights.

The handicapper has clearly been kind to Roxyfet, though his switches between hurdles and larger fences may also explain why he appears to have got into this Wetherby race lightly.

Roxyfet has so much in his favour – the ground, the trip, less weight on board when last sent chasing – that backing him to land the spoils makes perfect sense.
